Comets Get Home Win Over Cougars

The Mayville State Women's Basketball team rebounded quickly after their loss on Saturday night with a big win at home against the visiting Cougars from the University of Minnesota-Morris this Sunday afternoon. Following a slim lead at the half, a strong third and fourth quarter effort was enough to give the Comets a 20 point win over the Cougars, 75 to 55.

The Comets turned it up a bit after UM-Morris tied it up at 5 in the early going. A nice 10 to 3 run gave the Comets a seven point lead, fueled by back to back three's from Claire Blascziek and Joelle Ertl. Blascziek would pour in 8 of the Comet's 17 first quarter points, however UM-M narrowed the lead to 4 at the end of the first quarter. MSU would get up by 7 in a hurry to start the second quarter, but had to work hard to fight off a run by the Cougars that brought them within 2 with 3:27 to play. The final minutes of the first half were competitive, as Ertl and Blascziek helped lift the Comets up by 7 again, but the Cougars would continue to battle back and tied it up at 29 before the break. Kylee Heurung would hit two free throws to give the Comets the lead at 31 to 29.

Mayville State would finish the game with a strong second half, scoring 20 points in the third quarter and limiting the Cougars to only adding 11 to the board in that same time span. Blascziek and company helped spark a nice 7 point run that would lift the Comets up by 8, and then break things loose with another 6-3 run to finish out the quarter. Hitting free throws was a key point in the quarter for MSU, as they hit 7 out of 9 to help build that lead. The fourth quarter was much of the same, as the Comets scored another 24 points and held off the Cougars by only allowing 15.  MSU held the Cougars to just three points in the opening three and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, which gave them the opportunity to extend their lead further by up to 21 at times, cashing in 13 more points on the run.

Coach Dennis Hutter felt the strong second half was the key to the victory for the Comets today. "We played very well in the second half. Again, we defended very well like last night. Thought we rebounded much better tonight. We also shot the ball much better tonight. It was a good team win."

The Comets were led by Claire Blascziek with a game-high of 21, she was 7-14 from the field and 5 for 7 on three's in the effort. Kylee Heurung and Nicole Bunting had 13 each. Heurung nearly had a double-double night with 9 boards, while Bunting was behind her with 7 total. MSU shot 42 percent from the floor and were 7 of 21 on three's, and 80 percent at the line with a 20-25 night at the stripe. Blascziek and Heurung each had 3 steals in the game, part of 11 total for the Comets.

The Comets bump up their record to 4-5. They'll take a needed break from a busy November and play the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, ND on Wednesday, December 12th.
