MAYVILLE, N.D. - The day finally arrived - the Mayville State Comets Football team anxiously awaited their home opener for the annual Farmers Bowl game against the College of Saint Scholastica and for their first game on their new turf installed at Jerome Berg Field. The game brought out many Comet faithful to witness the historic day of a ribbon cutting ceremony and a chance to see Coach Thom get his first win as head coach of the Comets. In quite the back and forth battle, the Comets were able to secure the win and make some memories for all in attendance.
In the first quarter, the Saints were the ones to strike first, marching down the field for a 75- yard drive within the first few minutes of the game, capping it with a QB keeper from Zach Edwards. MSU was able to answer it back, going on a 76-yard drive of their own that ended with a
Creighton Pfau to
Trent Momon connection on an 11-yard completion. But, the PAT was unsuccessful, 7-6 Saints in the early going. CSS finished out the quarter with another touchdown and the lead, this time on a 67-yard drive which ended on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Zach Edwards to Ben Buthe, making things 14-6 at the end of the first.
The Comets were unable to answer until they were able to string together a nice drive of 94 yards, ending in a connection from Pfau to
Darrel Wilson on an 11-yard TD to bring the Comets within one. Mayville State was able to keep the Saints scoreless and put another solid drive together with another Pfau to Momon touchdown, a 9-yard reception with 33 second left in the half to put the Comets in the lead 20-14.
After the half, the Comets came out strong with an early TD at 12:43 in the third, another Pfau to Momon pass for Momon's third TD of the day, making it 27-14 after the PAT. But, CSS quickly answered back in just 12 seconds on the kickoff return, the Comets were unable to contain the Saints' Jerry Gildersleeve on a 48-yard return. The momentum continued in the third quarter, as CSS had a 45-yard drive, this time ending on a 10-yard TD pass and giving them a 29-27 lead.
The Comets knew they had to make it happen in order to come out with the victory. They were able to string together a nice drive that was capped with a Pfau QB keeper for a 1-yard score, lifting them into the lead at 33-29. That drive was produced completely on the ground, with
Gino Musick and
Preston Hamlette sharing the load that brought the Comets three first downs and the TD to seal it. MSU was able to trade some possessions back and forth to drain the clock, and halt a final 51-yard drive with a turnover on downs with just over a minute left to play, ending the game with a Comet win, 33-29.
"Phenomenal day! Feel blessed to be a part of MSU! So happy for our kids, who had to fight through tremendous amounts of adversity," explained head coach
Sean Thom. "Trent (Momon) & Creighton (Pfau) had a great day, as well as our entire offense who rushed for 270+ yards. Defense stepped up big after the first quarter and sealed the deal in 4th quarter. Great day to be a Comet!"
