JAMESTOWN, ND – The Mayville State women's basketball team ran into a tough matchup Wednesday night at Newman Arena. The #21 ranked Comets took on the (RV) University of Jamestown Jimmies, falling 81-51 in non-conference action. The Comets dropped to 9-2 overall with the loss.
Mayville State took a 10-8 lead at the midway point of the first quarter when
Claire Blascziek hit a three-pointer. That bucket was the last of the first quarter, as the Jimmies went on a 16-0 run to end the first, leading Mayville State 24-10 after one. The Comets' Blascziek attempted to cut the lead in half with seven seconds to go in the quarter, but she missed a two-point shot.
Cyan Hale cut the lead in half just 57 seconds into the second quarter, but then Jamestown battled to take a 17-point lead less than a minute later, on a basket in the paint by Paige Anderson, which followed Paige Schmidt's three-pointer less than a minute earlier.
Taylor Shamp and
Jordan Zrust teamed up to hit two free-throws, and then Shamp hit a two-pointer, cutting the lead to 30-17 with 4:58 to go in the half.
That's when the Jimmies answered. Olivia Anderson hit a three-pointer with 3:49 left, only to be followed by a three by Blaszciek with 3:23 to go, making it a 13-point game.
Kylee Heurung pulled the Comets to within 11 points with a bucket with 3:03 to go, 33-22. Jamestown took a 44-26 lead into halftime, with Heurung nailing one of two free-throws with 23 seconds left in the half, after being fouled by Emma Stoehr.
Jamestown started the second half on a 10-1 run, with the lone Comet point being a free-throw by Heurung with 8:56 to go in the third quarter. Zrust pulled the Comets back within 25, hitting a pair of free-throws with 4:09 left in the third quarter. The teams then went back-and-forth, with Heurung capturing the last basket in the third quarter, nailing a three-pointer with 13 seconds left.
Her hot shooting continued to start the fourth, as she shot out of the break, hitting a basket 19 seconds in, pulling Mayville State to within a 63-40 margin.
Jamestown went on a 13-5 run throughout the middle of the fourth quarter, taking a 78-48 lead with 3:36 to go.
Sara Herzog, off the bench, scored three points in a span of just over a minute, but was countered by a three by Jamestown's Macy Savela.
Two Comets finished in double-figures: Heurung had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Zrust finished with 11 points in the contest. Shamp had a big night on the boards, finishing with 10 rebounds, six of them on the defensive glass.
The Comets will be off until Sunday, when they travel to Fargo to take on Jory Collins and the North Dakota State Bison (1-9). The Bison are coming off a 64-63 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers last Sunday. The game will tip off at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Scheels Center in Fargo.
