MORRIS, MINN. – After dropping a 74-81 matchup against the 12
th ranked Saint Xavier University Cougars on November 8 in Chicago, the 20th ranked Comet women's basketball team has won four straight, including Tuesday night's 74-44 win over the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars at the Cougar Sports Center in non-conference action. The win comes one week after defeating the Cougars at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville.
The difference was Mayville State's defense, only allowing 15 points in the second half, after allowing 29 in the first half against a pesky Cougars team.
The Cougars held a lead through the first three minutes, until
Kylee Heurung's three-pointer off a steal by Claire Blaszciek, made it 6-4. The first basket of the contest for the Comets was also a three-pointer, by
Nicole Bunting.
Mia Wassink, who was a difference-maker last Tuesday, tied the game at 6-6 just seconds later, but the Comets continued to fight. Bunting pushed the Comets ahead by two with 6:06 left in the first quarter, only to be stopped there. The Cougars eventually pulled ahead by seven points with 4:33 to go in the first quarter of play. Both the Comets and Cougars battled back-and-forth, with Mayville State taking a 21-20 deficit into the first quarter break.
Back-to-back buckets by
Kylee Heurung allowed the Comets to pull away. But Becca Holland's bucket with 3:22 to go in the half stopped the run. Back-to-back Wassink buckets pulled the Cougars to within nine points, but Mayville State extended the lead to 12 heading into the halftime break.
Heurung continued her offensive dominance in the third quarter, as she hit a layup in the paint with 3:33 to go in the third, pulling the Comets ahead by 14 points, 50-36. The Cougars fought back, as Haley Wollschlager's three-pointer with 1:29 to go pulled the Cougars back to within 10 points.
The fourth quarter started fast, as
Cyan Hale connected for four points in the first two minutes, along with another Bunting two-pointer, pulling the Comets ahead by an almost-insurmountable lead. Mayville State continued their dominance, with
Taylor Reilly registering a bucket and putting the Comets ahead by 30 points.
Erin Walcker's layup with 2:45 to go was the dagger in the contest, as the Comets led by 32 points at that time.
Hale led the Comets with 15 points, while Bunting had 14, Heurung 13 and Blascziek finished with 12 points.
