Jamestown Bests Comets
Friday's game against the University of Jamestown was a heartbreaker for Mayville State, as they lost the lead late in a 9-3 defeat.
MSU struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Jimmies, giving up nine runs. The Comets got the offense going in the second inning, when
Lacey Burr tripled on a 1-1 count, scoring a run to make it 1-0.
Brooke Roeges and
Dayna Gutierrez followed that with back-to-back RBI singles to bring the Comet lead to 3-0 in the second.
The Jimmies were able to chip away, play defense and score a couple runs in the sixth inning, the game was tied at three when Sydney Prussia tripled on a 2-2 count, scoring another run. Prussia then scored two batters later to make things 5-3.
From there, Jamestown scored four runs in the seventh inning. Morgan Geiszler and Miriah Yoder powered the big inning with RBI to give the Jimmies the win over the Comets.Â
Annika Seedborg led things off in the circle for Mayville State. She allowed 13 hits and five runs over five and a third innings, striking out four and walking one.
Lindsey Swanson and
Hayle Boechler entered the game as relief, throwing one and one-third innings and one-third of an inning respectively.
Dayna Gutierrez went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Comets. Jamestown scattered 19 hits in the game with Mariah Wick and Morgan Geiszler leading the way with three hits each.Â
Mount Marty Too Much
Despite a 5-run deficit in the fourth inning, the Comets almost came all the way back, eventually falling 8-6 to Mount Mary in MSU's second game on Friday. Despite the loss, Mayville State collected eight hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Mount Mary had 12 hits on the way to victory.
Mayville State got things started in the first inning when
Lacey Burr drew a walk, scoring one run. Then
Sierra Niedge followed that with a single that scored
Shaye Kemball and
Lindsey Swanson to make it 3-0 early.
Mount Marty chipped away at the lead with runs in the first and third innings, then the Lancers found their bats and pulled away for good with six runs in the fourth. That inning saw Makenzi Howard homer on a 1-0 count, scoring three runs, Dani Lowe doubled on the first pitch of her at bat, scoring two runs, and Grace Helyer doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring another run.
Mayville State put up three runs in the sixth inning after back-to-back doubles by
Brooke Roeges and
Dayna Gutierrez to bring it to 8-6, but that's as close as the Comets would get.Â
Shaye Kemball started the game for Mayville State. She allowed seven hits and six runs over three innings, striking out two.
Annika Seedborg and
Sidney Fairbanks entered the game as relief, throwing two and two-thirds innings and one-third of an inning respectively.
The Comets racked up eight hits in the game with
Sierra Niedge and
Amanda Izzo leading the way with two hits each, Niedge also added two RBI. Mount Marty's Makenzi Howard led the Lancers with three RBIs and Grace Helyer handled things at the plate by going 2-for-3 with two RBI.Â
The Comets will come back tomorrow morning and face off with Dakota Wesleyan at 10 a.m. and follow that with a noon start time against York College.Â
