MAYVILLE, ND – Less than 24 after a road win in Sioux City, Iowa, the Mayville State volleyball team was at home for a Saturday matinee matchup against the Lakehead University Thunderwolves at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, one that ended in a 3-0 sweep in favor of the Comets. In Friday night's match, the Comets took Briar Cliff University to five sets. It was uncertain how the long match, paired with the long travel home, would affect the Comets.
It didn't take long to figure out how the Comets would be affected by their travels on the eve before, as Mayville State got into a groove and cruised to the victory against a tough Lakehead University team. For the Comets, it was their eighth straight match win.
"I thought the kids responded well," head coach
Lindsey Johnson said. "It was nice to see our kids rise to the occasion and get it done."
Mayville State jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the first set, mainly on errors committed by Lakehead University. But, once Lakehead University got into a groove, there was no stopping them, as Mayville State saw just moments later in the first set.
"I felt like once our blocking came around, our offense followed," Johnson said.
Mayville State was ahead 7-3, then the tides turned in favor of Lakehead University.
Meghan Routier, who ended up being one of the leaders, started a 5-0 run for Lakehead, with a kill on a pass by Rachel Sweezey. Then, Rebekah Hara's serve found a spot near
Jordyn Lucas on the floor, pulling Lakehead University to within two points, 7-5. Hara then picked up a second ace, finding space next to
Jayden Warner, making it 7-6. Routier would tie it with again another monstrous kill, followed by, on the next rally, a kill by Megan Nahachewsky, pulling Lakehead University ahead by one point, 8-7.
Mayville State then got it back for three points, pulling ahead 10-8.
The two teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the first set, with the Comets prevailing 26-24 in extra points.
The start of the second set was all Lakehead University, as they took a commanding 7-4 lead early. That lead was short lived, as the Comets went on a 7-0 run to pull ahead 11-7, on the heels of perfect serving by
Elora Passa, who served well for the Comets. Two runs, one of three points and one of four points, put the Comets into control, leading to a pair of
Hannah Bliss kills, preceded by a pair of
Victoria Johnson kills, putting the second set away, 25-18, in favor of Mayville State.
A 7-4 run, to start the third set, began to pace the Comets, who looked unstoppable as they hit their groove. Late in the third set, the Comets pulled out to a 19-11 lead, one they'd never look back at.
Back-to-back-to-back points by Mayville State, on a service error by Lakehead University, then a kill by Johnson and, the final dagger, a double-block by Johnson and Bliss, wrapped up set three, 25-14, in favor of Mayville State.
Victoria Johnson led the Comets with 13 kills and seven blocks, while Passa finished with 29 assists. Warner finished the game with 17 digs.
"She just keeps getting better," coach Johnson said of
Victoria Johnson.
