MADISON, SD – Mayville State came into Sunday night's game in Madison, S.D., with one goal in mind—the same goal they've had all season—get one percent better. And, with Sunday's 66-64 win over Dakota State University, the Comets continued on that pace.
Tied at 44-44, the 16
th-ranked Comets outscored Dakota State 22-20 in the final frame to escape their road trip to Madison with a win.
"I am glad we got the win tonight," Comets head coach
Dennis Hutter said. "It was a rough week with the schedule and the games getting moved back."
Dakota State held a five-point advantage, 17-12, after one quarter.
"We started slowly tonight," Hutter said. "But we fought back a few times."
Neither team was able to jump out to a large lead, with Mayville State's largest being six points, while Dakota State held an eight-point lead at one point in the late goings of the first quarter.
Two Comets finished in double figures, with
Nicole Bunting finishing with 18 points, including five three-pointers.
Kylee Heurung finished with 16 points, shooting eight-for-10 from the free-throw line. Heurung finished with a double-double, adding 18 rebounds to her 16 points.
Andrea Skillingstad also had double-digit rebounds, finishing with 14 rebounds in the contest.
"The kids played with great effort and heart tonight," Hutter said.
Dakota State scored their final bucket with 15 seconds left in the game.
"We did not close the game as well as we would have liked," he said. "But we found a way to win. Hopefully we can keep it going next weekend."
The Comets will travel to Valley City next Friday to take on the Valley City State Vikings, and will travel to Dickinson State on Saturday.
