Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University volleyball team picked up two more wins at home and now are 7-0 at home this season with sweeps over Dickinson State and University of Northwestern. The Comets move to 12-2 on the season and 4-0 in conference play.
Game One:
In-game one against the Blue Hawks, both teams were trading points early in the contest. The Comets would prevail late in the first set with a 25-20 victory. The Comets would take the second set by a final score of 25-19 and take a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
The Comets had multiple match points in the third set and the Blue Hawks would keep the game alive with back-to-back points to cut the lead to 24-20 before the Comets would end it and finish the sweep 25-20. The Comets finished the first game with 47 kills, on 89 attempts, and 18 errors for a hitting percentage of .326.
MSU would also finish with two aces, 4.0 blocks, 39 assists, and 67 digs. Victoria Johnson and Elora Passa each finished the game with 13 kills. Passa also recorded 17 assists and seven digs. Rachel Hill tallied 17 assists and seven digs. Mason Hart led the back row with 23 digs. Amy Seim finished the game with 12 digs in the back row.
Game Two:
The Comets and Eagles traded points early in the set, then Mayville took advantage of Eagle errors and took a lead late into the first set. The Eagles would claw back and make it a set before the Comets closed out the first set 25-22. Mayville State took an early lead in the second set and did not look back as they took a commanding two-set lead with a 25-15 set win.
Mayville State was up big in the third set before the Eagles crawled back into the game and had it within two points late in the third set. The Comets would rally off two straight points to pick up the second sweep of the day. The Comets finished the game with 37 kills on 98 attempts, and seven errors for a .306 hitting percentage. They also recorded six aces, seven blocks, 35 assists, and 53 digs.
MSU was led by Victoria Johnson, finishing with ten kills and one block. Ashley Pyburn finished with nine kills, and five blocks. Elora Passa and Rachel Hill combined for 35 assists. Hill also recorded nine digs in the back row. Mason Hart for the second consecutive game finished with 20-plus digs.
The Comets hit the road Thursday, as they travel to Viterbo University. No away fans are allowed in Viterbo's facility. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 PM against the V-Hawks.
