LaCrosse, WI – The Mayville State University Volleyball team defeated Viterbo for the first time in school history with a 3-1 set victory. With the win, the Comets extend the winning streak to 10 games with a 13-2 overall record and 5-0 in conference play.
The Comets and V-Hawks were tied at five in the first set before MSU went on a 12-2 run to jump out to a 17-7 lead.
Lily Pyle and
Ashley Pyburn each recorded a block during the run. Two kills later in the first set by Passa to give the Comets a convincing 25-14 first set win.
The second set went back-and-forth for the first eight points before Viterbo took a lead at 12-17. The Comets would fight back late in the second set down 15-21 before a 4-0 run to cut the Viterbo lead to two. VU scored four-of-the-next five points to take the second set 20-25.
Mayville State started the third set fast, jumping out to an 8-3 lead off kills by Johnson and Passa. The Comets continued to have a five-point lead throughout the third set before the V-Hawks closed the gap to one at 18-17. After Viterbo tied the game at 21,
Victoria Johnson tallied one of her kills to give MSU a one-point lead at 22-21. With the Comets up 24-23,
Elora Passa recorded a kill to give the Comets a 2-1 set lead.
The game was tied at nine in the set when the Comets scored two straight points on a kill from Johnson and a service ace by
Rachel Hill. The Comets and V-Hawks were tied at 15 before a 5-0 run by the Comets to give them a 20-15 lead late in the fourth set.
Lily Pyle tallied two kills during that run. After the V-Hawks tied the game at 23, back-to-back attacking errors by Viterbo gave the Comets a 25-23 set victory and a 3-1 match win.
MSU finished the game with 48 kills, 12 errors, on 133 attempts for a hitting percentage of .271. The Comets also recorded 86 digs, 45 assists, 11 blocks, and four aces.
Victoria Johnson finished the game with 18 kills on 40 attempts with eight blocks.
Elora Passa finished the game with a triple-double tallying 12 kills, 17 assists, and 13 digs.
Mason Hart recorded a game-high 35 digs in the contest with one service ace.
Rachel Hill added to her team-high service aces with one. She also recorded six digs, and 24 assists.
Lily Pyle tallied nine kills in the victory with three blocks, and two digs.
Amy Seim tallied 12 digs in the four-set victory.
The Comets are back in action Friday at home against Dakota State University. JV will start at 4:00 pm with the Varsity starting around 6:00 pm against the Trojans.
