Aberdeen, S.D. - The Mayville State University Comet football team picked up the first victory under head coach
Rocky Larson Saturday with a 42-14 victory over the Presentation College Saints. The Comets move to 1-4 on the season.
MSU started the scoring at the 4:37 mark of the first quarter with one-yard touchdown run by
Tim Salmon. At about the midway point of the second quarter
Tim Salmon tossed one of his two passing touchdowns to Josh Portillo from 15-yards out to take a 14-0 lead.
At the 9:13 point of the third quarter, Josh Portillo caught his second touchdown of the game, this time for 75-yards to extend the lead to 21-0. Presentation College answered with a passing touchdown three minutes later to cut the lead to 21-7.
Tim Salmon tallied his second rushing touchdown with 2:36 left in the third quarter to give the Comets a three-touchdown advantage at 28-7. With 6:35 left in the fourth quarter, the Comets put the finishing touches with a
Jason Nelson five-yard touchdown run to give MSU a 35-7 lead.
Jason Nelson would score one more touchdown from 29-yards to give the Comets a 42-14 victory.
Mayville State finished the game with season-high 183 rushing yards, 349 passing yards, and 532 total yards. The defense allowed 279 total yards and a season-low 14 points.
Tim Salmon completed 21 passes for 349 yards, and two touchdowns. Salmon also had two rushing touchdowns on 22 yards rushing.
Jason Nelson ran for a season-high 135 rushing yards, on 22 carries, and two touchdowns. Josh Portillo had a career-high 13 receptions, for 237 yards, and two touchdowns.
Austin DeLaroque finished with a team-high eight tackles on defense with 2.0 tackles for loss and one forced fumble.
Danzele Navy and
Dorian Duchene finished the game with one interception.
Trent Carlson tallied four tackles, 1.0 tackles for loss, and 1.0 sacks.
Comets are on the road next weekend as they travel to Madison, South Dakota as they face Dakota State. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm against the Trojans.
