Comet Women's Basketball opens season at Isreal-Strong Memorial Tournament

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University women's basketball team opens the 2020-21 at the Isreal-Strong Memorial Tournament in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The Comets will play Trinity Bible on Friday afternoon at 1:30 PM and Saturday at 1:30 PM against Dickinson State on the campus of Presentation College.

Quick Hits on the Comets:
The Comets opens the 2020-21 season after a 25-6 record and securing a birth to NAIA National Tournament last season. MSU finished the regular season as the co-regular season champions with Bellevue and were the second seed in the tournament. The Comets defeated Waldorf in the opening round of the NSAA Postseason Tournament and defeated Dakota State in the semifinals 85-82. Mayville State would defeat Viterbo in the NSAA Championship game by a final score of 74-70, with Junior Kylee Heuring being named Tournament MVP. Kylee Heruing was also named NSAA Player of the Year and First-Team All-Conference. Jordan Zrust is entering her sophomore season after averaging 16.1 minutes per game, 9.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 25 steals during her freshman campaign.  
 
Matching up with the Blue Hawks:
The Blue Hawks enter the tournament with a 1-2 overall record, defeating Mount Marty last week in the NAIA Classic. Dickinson State is averaging 66.3 points per game, 35.3 rebounds, shooting 38.1 percent from the field, and 27.3 percent from behind the arc. Courtney Olson in one game this season, scored 26 points, 8-of-9 from the field, and 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Ashlie Watts is averaging 8.7 points per game, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.0 steals. Lilly Kelly is leading the Blue Hawks with seven assists, 7.3 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. The Blue Hawks were picked sixth in the NSAA Preseason Coaches' Poll with 21 points, Bellevue was picked first with 60 points.
 
Matching up with the Lions:
The Lions enter the 2020 season with a Friday matchup with the Comets after a 7-19 2019-20 season. TBC averaged 51.0 points per game, 33.1 percent from the field, 23.4 percent from the 3-point line, and 62.1 free throw percentage. The Comets have beat the Lions in the past three seasons allowing a combined 93 points over those three games.
