Comet Softball Drops Two on Opening Day

GAME 1 - Comets 1, Blue Hawks 2
Walk-Off Seals Win For DSU Blue Hawks Against Mayville State University Comets Varsity

It came down to the last at bat of the game, but the Comets were on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat to Dickinson State in the season opener on Friday. The game was tied at one with the Blue Hawks batting in the bottom of the seventh when Dallis Mitchell singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring a run and giving DSU the win.

Mayville State fired up the offense in the second inning when Lindsey Swanson drove in Brooke Roeges with a single to right field.

From there, the Blue Hawks were able to knot the game up at one in the bottom of the third when Jaya Allen grounded out to the second basemand, scoring Trinity Anderson.

The game went quiet until the seventh inning when Jaya Allen hit a one-out single to right, then a sacrifice bunt moved Allen to second. Dallis Mitchell was able to take care of the rest and knock the Blue Hawks' runner in and give DSU the walk-off win.

The pitching was strong on both sides. DSU Blue Hawks pitchers struck out 12, while Mayville State sat down four.

Shaye Kemball was on the rubber for the Comets. She went six and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out four.

Swanson led Mayville State with two hits and an RBI in three at bats.

Mitchell went 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate to lead DSU at the plate.

GAME 2 - Comets 7, Jimmies 12
Mayville State University Comets Varsity's Strong Offense Falls Just Short To University Of Jamestown

Both pitching staffs had their hands full in game two on Friday in a high-scoring affair where the Jimmies bested the Comets in a shootout, 12-7.

Mayville State got things started in the first when Jocelyn Ontiveros doubled to left on a 2-1 count, scoring Dayna Gutierrez and Shaye Kemball.

Jamestown was able to put up the big number with eight runs in the third inning. In that frame, Two doubles then a Geiszler home run on the first pitch of the at bat put the Jimmies up 4-2 quickly. Then a Cota single drove in another on the first pitch of the at bat, Wick doubled on a 1-2 count to scoring two more runs, and then a sac fly brought home one more before the Jimmies were done in the third.

The Jimmies were able to build the lead to 10-3 before Mayville State's Mackenzie Duval hit a grand slam with a drive to center in the sixth inning to bring things to 10-7. From there, Jamestown was able to tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh to put things out of reach for the Comets.

Other than the grand slam from Duval, Shaye Kemball went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Comets at the plate.

Jamestown totaled 15 hits in the game. Wick, Zito, Reisdorfer, Geiszler, and Martinez all had multiple hits for the Jimmies.
