Rebecca McKown was able to put the ball in play on the ground, scoring
Jocelyn Ontiveros and advancing
Tai Yamamoto to third base.
Laura Spurgeon was able to put one deep enough to centerfield for Yamamoto to tag up and score to build the Comet lead to 4-2.
MSU tacked one more on in the top of the seventh on their way to a 5-2 win over Dakota Wesleyan.
The Comets got on the board in the first inning with
Tai Yamamoto driving in
Dayna Gutierrez on a base hit up the middle.
Brooke Roeges then doubled on the next at bat to bring in
Jocelyn Ontiveros to put Mayville State up 2-0 early in the game.
Dakota Wesleyan tied things up at two in the third inning when Alexis Konda hit into a fielder's choice, scoring a run and matching the Comets' score at 2 runs. From there, both teams were quiet until McKown started the scoring in the top of the sixth, pushing the Comets ahead down the stretch.
Shaye Kemball was in the pitcher's circle for Mayville State. She went seven innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking one.
Mayville State tallied six hits on the day. Yamamoto and Roeges both racked up two hits to lead the way for the Comets.
GAME 2 - Comets 4, Morningside 7
Late Score Costs Comets Against Morningside
The Comets lost the lead late in a 7-4 defeat to Morningside in MSU's second game on Saturday. Things were tied at three with the Mustangs batting in the top of the seventh when Carson Cameron homered on a 1-0 count, scoring three runs. Morningside added one more before the inning was over when Morgan Nixon drove in a run to make it 7-3.

Shaye Kemball home run in the bottom of the seventh wasn't enough to spark a late comeback for the Comets, giving the Mustangs the 7-4 win.
Morningside got things going right off the bat with two runs in the first inning. The Comets were able to come back with a run in the bottom half of the first after taking advantage of a Morningside error. But, the Mustangs responded right back with another run in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the third inning, Mayville State's
Tai Yamamoto homered to dead center on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs and tying things up at three runs each. From there, the Mustangs managed to connect on the big home run in the seventh, giving them the eventual win.
Shaye Kemball led the Comets with two hits in three at bats. Yamamoto and McKown also added hits to lead the way for the Comets at the plate.
Ellie Cropley went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Morningside.
