Comets drop NSAA game to Trojans Sunday

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Men's Basketball team dropped a conference game to Dakota State Sunday by a final score of 72-60. The Comets drop to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Through the first eight minutes of the game, the Comets and Trojans traded baskets and were tied at 10. The game was tied at 14 before back-to-back three-point baskets by Winder to give the Comets the lead. After a Trojan basket to trim the lead to four, MSU went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to double figures. Dakota State would finish the half with a 16-3 run to take a two-point lead heading into the intermission.

Dakota State would continue to slowly extend their lead through the first seven minutes of the half, as they held a 10-point lead. With 12:00 minutes left, the Comets trailed by 13 before a 7-0 run capped off by free-throws by Gieske trimmed the Trojan lead to six. Six-points was the closest the Comets could get as they drop the NSAA game to the Trojans.

Mayville State finished the game shooting 35.3 percent from the field, 20.7 percent from behind the 3-point line, 41 rebounds, and 12 assists on 24 made field goals. The Comets also had seven points off turnovers, 14 second-chance points, 27 bench points, and forced eight Trojans turnovers.

Thomas Gieske finished with a team-high 14 points and four rebounds. John Ketchel finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Keiron Goodwin was the last player in double figures, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds. Iker Cruz tallied eight points, seven rebounds, and one assist. Winder Joseph finished with seven points, three rebounds, two steals, and one assist.

Tuesday's game against Trinity Bible College is postponed, so the next game for the Comets will be Friday at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse against rival Valley City State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm against the Vikings.
