Zrust scored 10 points in the final quarter to help Comets defeat Vikings

Valley City, N.D. – The Mayville State University Women's Basketball team defeated the Vikings Saturday afternoon by a final score of 58-53. The Comets move to 11-3 on the regular season and 6-2 in conference play.

It was a back-and-forth game throughout the first quarter as the biggest lead was three for VCSU a couple of times during the quarter. Valley City State lead by three after the first quarter. Mayville State were trailing by one early in the second quarter before Mayville State went on a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead. VCSU would tie the game at 28 with 21 seconds left in the half, as we headed into the intermission tied.

The Comets scored the first five points of the third quarter to take a 5-point lead. VCSU would answer with the next six points to take a one-point lead. The whole third quarter was within three points as the Comets took a one-point lead heading into the final quarter. Mayville State started on an 8-2 run to jump out to a seven-point lead. Valley City closed the Mayville lead to three with 55 seconds left. MSU would hit two free-throws down the stretch to pick up a five-point victory.

Mayville State would finish the game shooting 42.1 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from behind the arc, and 10 assists on 24 made field goals. MSU also finished with 29 points in the paint, eight points off turnovers, and five bench points. Jordan Zrust finished the game with 17 points, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Danneka Voegeli was the other Comet in double figures tonight with 12 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, and one steal. CJ Decker tallied nine points, four rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Kayla Rocholl also finished with nine points, five rebounds, two steals, one assist, and one block. Erin Walcker recorded six points, nine rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

The Comets are back home on Tuesday as they face-off against the Trojans. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm from the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
