Madison, S.D. – The Mayville State University Men's Basketball continues to lead the NSAA after Saturday's win over Dakota State by a final score of 74-67. The Comets move to 11-4 on the regular season and 8-3 in conference play.
A tightly contested game through the first 10 minutes of the game as neither time held a lead bigger than four. Mayville State would grab the first big lead of the game on Saturday with 9:06 left in the first half after a bucket by Goodwin gave the Comets a six-point advantage. After the Comets gained the six-point lead, the Trojans would answer with a 7-0 run and take a one-point lead. With The Comets up four points with 1:33 left in the half, DSU finished the half on a 6-0 run and took a two-point lead into the intermission.
Early in the second half, the Comets regained the lead but was stolen right back from the Trojans when they went on a 7-2 run to take a two-point lead. MSU would answer that run with an 11-2 run to open up their biggest lead of the game at nine. Dakota State would slowly shorten the Comets lead in the middle stages of the second half and cut the lead all the way down to one possession with 5:38 left in the game.
Ensuing possession for Mayville State, Brown-Henderson would hit a 3-pointer to get the lead back to five and the Comets would not allow the Trojans any closer as they picked up the seven-point victory Saturday night. Mayville State finished the game shooting 48.0 percent from the field, 47.6 percent from the 3-point line, and dishing out 17 assists on 24 made field goals.
Iker Cruz was one of two players in double figures tonight for the Comets, finishing with 12 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Xavier Towne also scored 12 points and pulled in three rebounds. John Ketchel tallied nine points, three rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Latrelle Franklin and Keiron Goodwin each scored eight points in the victory.
Thomas Gieske recorded 10 points, five rebounds, and one assist off the bench for the Comets. Winder Joseph tallied nine points, three rebounds, and one assist in the victory. Najee Brown-Henderson recorded six points, one steal, and one assist.
Mayville State is back in action Friday and Saturday at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse as Viterbo University and Waldorf University come to town. Tip-off on Friday is scheduled for 7:30 pm against the V-Hawks and 5:00 pm on Saturday against the Warriors.
