Casselton, N.D. – The Mayville State Softball team dropped two games against Dickinson State and Doane University by a final score of 5-1 and 4-1. The Comets drop to 2-6 on the regular season.
Game One:
Dickinson State scored runs in the first, third, fifth, and seventh inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Comets had multiple chances throughout the first game as they stranded seven runners over three innings. The Comets cracked the scoring one run on one hit in the seventh inning. Ontiveros singled in Duval in the seventh inning to finish the scoring in game one.
The Comets finished the first game with six hits, three errors, and three walks. Mackenzie Duval finished game one with two hits and one run scored. Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied one hit, one run batted in, and one walk. Sadie Mathews, Alissa Foster, and Brooke Roeges each tallied one hit in the loss. Sidney Fairbanks pitched a complete game for the Comets allowing 12 hits, four earned runs, and two strikeouts.
Game Two:
The Tigers scored three runs from the first five batters but Boll got the next three batters out and got out of the inning with only allowing three runs. The Comets get on the board in the bottom of the second on a home run from Roeges to cut the lead to two. Doane added one more run in the top of the third inning on three hits to take a 4-1 lead.
Mayville State added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on two hits and one Tiger error. Spurgeon stole second base and the throw went into centerfield that scored the second MSU run. Mayville State had a chance in the bottom of the sixth inning as they had runners on first and second with two outs but grounded out to shortstop to end the threat. The Comets would get the tying run to the plate but could not get the runner on base and drop game two by a final of 4-2.
Brooke Roeges tallied two hits, two runs scored, and one run batted in. Laura Spurgeon tallied two hits as well for the Comets. Mackenzie Duval tallied the last hit for the Comets in the loss. Courtney Boll tallied a complete game allowing 14 hits, four earned runs, and three strikeouts in the loss.
