Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Softball team picked up a sweep over Dakota State on day one of a conference doubleheader by a final score of 3-1 and 12-7. The Comets move to 9-13 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Game One:
The Comets scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a single from Kemball to score Gutierrez. Mayville State added another run in the bottom of the third inning on two hits. A two-out rally from a Duval single and double from Kemball scored the second run of the game. The Trojans answered with one run in the top of the fourth inning on one hit to cut the lead in half.
Mayville State added one more insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on two hits. Another two-out rally from Foster's single and Ontiveros double scored the third run of the game. Kemball was dominant in the circle in game one allowing four hits, one run scored, two walks, and two strikeouts. Shaye Kemball and Alissa Foster each tallied two hits in the victory. Kemball also drove in two runs in the victory.
Game Two:
Game Two also started with the Comets scoring runs in the first inning scoring five runs on five hits. Duval singled in Stegman and Larkin to get the Comets on the scoreboard. The next batter Kemball singled to centerfield to score Duval. With runners on second and third base, Milligan doubled to centerfield to score Kemball and Ontiveros and jump out to an early lead.
Dakota State scored one run in the top of the second inning to put the Comet lead at 5-1. The Trojans added three more runs in the top of the third inning on five hits. The Comets add three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to jump out to an 8-4 lead. Milligan singled in Kemball for the first run of the inning, bases loaded walk by Mathews scored Foster, and Stegman reached on a fielder's choice and it scored Ontiveros.
Mayville State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on three hits to jump out to a 10-4 lead. Back-to-back doubles from Kemball and Foster scored the first run of the inning and two batters later Roeges doubled to center to score Foster. The Trojans closed the gap in half in the top of the sixth inning scoring three runs on two hits. The Comets scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on one hit. Milligan doubled to right field to score Mackenzie Iverson and Hayle Boechler and give the Comets a 12-7 victory.
Madison Milligan recorded three hits and five runs batted in the game two victory. Shaye Kemball for the second consecutive game tallied two hits. Bailey Larkin Mackenzie Duval, Alissa Foster, Brooke Roeges, and Jocelyn Ontiveros each tallied one hit in the victory. Courtney Boll pitched all seven innings for the Comets allowing 10 hits, seven earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.
