Comets take two of three Saturday against V-Hawks

MAYVILLE, ND — The Mayville State baseball team took to the field on Saturday for what was scheduled to be a doubleheader against conference rival Viterbo. With the possibility of potential weather concerns for Sunday's scheduled doubleheader, the North Star Athletic Association allowed the Comets and V-Hawks to play three seven-inning contests on Saturday.

Mayville State dropped the first contest 3-2 before sweeping the final two games of the afternoon 4-3 and 7-1 at Scott Berry Field in Mayville.

Game One: Viterbo 3, Mayville State 2

The Viterbo V-Hawks took the lead, for good, in the top of the third inning, when Darrian Escobar-Winter launched the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence, giving Viterbo the 2-1 lead.

The V-Hawks made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth. Escobar-Winter, facing a 1-2 count, hit his second home run of the afternoon over the left-field fence again.

Mayville State got their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Theo May led the inning off with a single to shallow right field, followed two batters later by Skylar Forst's single to shallow center. Later in the inning, Anthony Villanueva singled to shallow right, scoring May.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth, with one out and facing a 3-1 count, May connected on a pitch to left, carried by the wind, over the fence for a solo home run.

He led the Comets, going two-for-three with two runs and an RBI. Forst, Villaneuva and Sammy Satrom each had a hit for the Comets.

Parker Stohr was the losing pitcher for Mayville State, pitching a complete game three-hitter, giving up three runs over the seven innings pitched. He struck out 10 batters in the loss.

Game Two: Mayville State 4, Viterbo 3

Things looked grim through three of seven innings in game two of the three game series between the Comets and V-Hawks as Viterbo held a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth, but the Comets offense came alive, scoring three runs over the final four innings to push the game to extra innings. An RBI single by Satrom, scoring Michael Theisen in the eighth inning, propelled the Comets to a 4-3 win in game two of the three-game set at Scott Berry Field.

Viterbo took the early 2-0 lead, as Escobar-Winter took the fourth pitch he faced and sent it straightaway left field for a solo home run. A single by Ryan Ellingson followed, and then Kevin Brandt tripled to deep left-center field, scoring Ellingson.

Remy Stern made it 3-0 when he scored on Ellingson's sacrifice fly to right with two outs in the top of the second inning.

Gunner Garpestad got Mayville State on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as he homered with one out on the first pitch he saw.

May pulled the Comets to within one as he hit a home run on the fourth pitch of his at-bat in the bottom of the sixth, followed by Garpestad scoring for the second time in the contest, after Forst doubled to deep left field.

Kenny Stewart picked up the win for Mayville State, pitching two innings of hitless relief. He struck out three batters. Starter Josh Rodriguez went six innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, while striking out seven V-Hawks batters.

Game Three: Mayville State 7, Viterbo 1

The bats were alive early and often in game three of the tripleheader Saturday afternoon, as the Mayville State University Comets racked up 10 hits in a 7-1 rout of the Viterbo V-Hawks in the third game of the day Saturday.

Mayville State took the lead early, but put insurance on their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Viterbo cut the lead to 2-1, the Comets answered in the bottom of the fourth with three runs.

After a walk to Forst and a hit by pitch to Satrom and a hit by pitch to Villaneuva, loading the bases, Marcus Wohl broke the game open with a single to left, scoring Satrom and Forst. May would later hit a single to left, scoring Villanueva. The Comets led 5-1 after four innings.

Two more runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning, courtesy of a two-run home run by Forst, to right field, after Garpestad singled to right one at-bat earlier.

Alex DeCaro picked up the win, pitching three-and-two thirds of relief, giving up six hits while striking out seven batters. Starting pitcher Matthew Johnston went three-and-a-third, giving up one run on three hits and striking out four batters.

Mayville State was led offensively by Theisen, who went three-for-four. Garpestad and Wohl each added two hits.
