Mayville, N.D. – The Comet Softball picked up a doubleheader sweep over Viterbo University on Sunday by a final score of 8-0 and 8-7. The Comets move to 19-15 overall and 15-7 in conference play.
Game One: Viterbo 0, Mayville State 8
The Comets started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on three hits. Gutierrez scored the first run of the game on a single to left field from Foster. Tingey doubled later in the inning that scored Kemball and Foster to give the Comets a 3-0 lead. Mayville State added two runs in the bottom of the second inning on three hits and one Viterbo error. Stegman scored on an infield single to short from Foster to take a 4-0 lead.
Later in the bottom of the second inning, Ontiveros singled to centerfield that scored Gutierrez. Viterbo threatened in the third inning but Kemball would get Schine to ground out to second with two runners on base. The Comets continued to extend the lead in the bottom of the third inning on two hits, and three hits. Kemball slapped a single to centerfield that scored both Milligan and Gutierrez to give the Comets a 7-0 lead.
The Mayville State added an eighth run in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits. Mackenzie Iverson scored in the inning on a single from Milligan to centerfield. The Comets allowed one hit in the top of the fifth inning but completed their second shutout of the weekend. Shaye Kemball picked up a complete game shutout, pitching 5.0 innings allowing four hits, and six strikeouts.
Four players finished with two hits and 11 total hits as a team. Dayna Gutierrez finished with two hits and three runs scored on three at-bats. Alissa Foster tallied two hits, two runs batted in, and one run scored on three at-bats. Ashlyn Tingey also tallied two hits and two runs batted in three at-bats. Madison Milligan recorded two hits, one run batted in, and one run scored.
Game Two: Viterbo 7, Mayville State 8
After the V-Hawks started the game going down in order, MSU scored three runs on four hits and two errors. Kemball doubled to left field to help score Gutierrez for the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Kemball scored on an infield single from Partyka and in the play, Foster scored on an error from the V-Hawks.
Viterbo scored two runs in the top of the second inning on four hits to cut the lead to one. The V-Hawks scored four more runs in the top of the third inning. The Comets were trailing by three runs in the bottom of the third inning when Ontiveros and Roeges tallied back-to-back hits to score one of two runs in the inning. Fierro doubled later in the third inning to score Roeges and cut the lead to one. The Comets took a one-run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring three runs.
Foster scored a run on a single from Roeges to tie the game at six. Later in the inning, Tingey singled to centerfield to score Ontiveros to take the one-run lead. Fierro hit a clutch single to extend the Comet lead to two when Partyka crossed home plate for the third run of the inning. Viterbo University would score one run in the top of the fifth inning on a fly out to the left field. The game was called after temperatures dropped below freezing so the Comets picked up the sweep.
Dayna Gutierrez tallied four hits and one run scored in game two. Nicole Fierro tallied two hits and two runs batted in on three at-bats. Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied two hits and two runs scored during her two at-bats. Brooke Roeges tallied two hits, two runs batted in, and one run scored in the victory. Sidney Fairbanks tallied a win allowing two hits one run scored. Courtney Boll tallied 3.0 innings allowing eight hits, four earned runs, and one strikeout.
