Valley City, N.D. – The Mayville State Comet Baseball team tallied nine hits and eight runs in game two to pick up a split with the Vikings on Tuesday. The Comets move to 18-9 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
Game One:
The Comets and Vikings went scoreless for two innings before the Comets broke the tie in the top of the third inning scoring one run on one hit. Brodey Rocholl ran for the catcher and scored on an error by the Vikings to give the Comets a 1-0 lead. Valley City State tied the game at one by scoring one run on one hit.
The Vikings took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning hitting a grand slam to right field to score four of the five in the inning and take a 6-1 lead on the Comets. VCSU would add runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and eighth inning to take game one by a final score of 10-1. Marcus Hughes and Jared McCorrister tallied four out of the five hits the Comets tallied in game one, Sammy Satrom recorded the other one.
Connor DiNaro started on the mound for the Comets allowing zero hits, no runs, and struck out two. Ryan Froemke and Alex DeCaro pitched the next two innings allowing one hit two walks, and one strikeout. Preston Edinger picked up the loss in game one allowing one hit, three earned runs and walking one batter. Ramsay Taliaferro allowed one hit and one earned run. Connor Cory pitched two innings allowing three hits, three earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. Brett Christoperson pitched 2.0 innings allowing three hits and two earned runs.
Game Two:
Mayville State started game two out fast scoring five runs in the top of the first inning on four hits. Rocholl scored on the throw to second base when Hughes stole second. Hughes later scored on a single to centerfield from Forst to make it 2-0. Villanueva and Forst scored the third and fourth in the first inning on a single from Ferrera to make it 4-0. The last run was scored on a bases-loaded walk from Wohl that scored Garpestad.
Valley City scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning on two hits and one Comet error. The Comets added one run in the top of the fifth inning on one hit. Satrom hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Garpestad to take a 6-2 advantage on the Vikings. In the top of the sixth inning, the Comets score one run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Villanueva that scored Hughes. Valley City State scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning on two Viking hits.
Mayville State scored one more run in the top of the seventh on a triple from McCorrister to score Rocholl to split the doubleheader 8-3. Two Comets finished with two hits in game two, Marcus Hughes and Skylar Forst. Calvin Watkins started the game on the mound going 4.0 innings allowing four hits, two earned runs, and one strikeout. Parker Stohr pitched one inning allowing one walk and struck out two. Kenneth Stewart pitched 2.0 innings allowing two hits, one earned run, and one strikeout.
