Comets split with Blue Hawks in NSAA doubleheader Saturday

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State baseball team scored 13 runs in the second game of the doubleheader to pick up a split in the final conference doubleheader of the regular season. The Comets move to 31-14 on the regular season and 20-8 in conference play.

Game One: Dickinson State 8, Mayville State 2

The Blue Hawks scored four runs in the top of the first inning off of two home runs to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. The Comets would answer with one run in the bottom of the second inning on a double from Forst and a single from Garpestad to score May. The middle innings only saw two hits as neither team could get many base runners until the bottom of the sixth inning when Theisen was drilled by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Tyler Ferrera to make it a 4-2 game.

Dickinson State blew the game open in the top of the eighth inning scoring four runs on four hits to jump out to an 8-2 lead. MSU fought back in the bottom of the eighth inning on a double from Theisen that scored Hughes and an error from the shortstop allowing Theisen to score a batter later. Marcus Wohl finished game one with two hits in four at-bats. Jared McCorrister, Michael Theisen, Skylar Forst, and Gunner Garpestad each tallied one hit in the loss.

Connor DiNaro picked up the loss in game one allowing 10 hits, four earned runs, two walks, six strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched. Adam Senden allowed two hits, four earned runs, and one walk. Calvin Watkins pitched 1.0 innings allowing two hits and striking out two. Jesse O'Connell also pitched 1.0 innings allowing one hit and striking out two.

Game Two: Dickinson State 2, Mayville State 13

Mayville State started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on one run and two hits. After Satrom singled and stole second base, Villanueva singled to left-center to score Satrom and give the Comets an early 1-0 lead. MSU added one more run in the bottom of the third inning on two hits. Theisen and May reached with one out before a Forst double that scored Theisen to make it 2-0. Dickinson State scored one run in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 2-1 game.

The Comets broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring nine runs, on three hits, and zero Dickinson State errors. The first two runs of the inning were scored on base-loaded walks. May then slapped a single to left field to score two more runs to make it 6-1. The next three runs for the Comets were scored on bases-loaded walks and hit by pitches to make it 9-1. Wohl then singled to left field to complete the nine-run inning scoring Satrom and Garpestad.

A solo home run from the Blue Hawks in the top of the fifth inning turned it into a 2-11 game with the Comets still in control. Mayville State would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single from Satrom that scored May with Forst scoring on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to give the Comets 13 runs in the second game. Matthew Johnston went the distance in game two allowing six hits, two earned runs, and four strikeouts over 7.0 innings of work.

Sammy Satrom led the Comets in game two going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, one run batted in, and one walk. Theo May and Skylar Forst each tallied two hits, and two runs scored. Marcus Wohl tallied one hit, two runs batted in, and one walk. Jared McCorrister recorded one hit in three at-bats and drove in one run as well. Anthony Villanueva drove in two runs on one hit and scored one run.

The Comets will play one more non-conference game against North Dakota State University on Tuesday, May 4th. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm from Newman Field in Fargo before the Conference Tournament starts on Friday in Valley City.
