Bellevue, Neb. – The Mayville State Softball team defeated the #2 seed Bruins then fell to the Warriors to end their season. The Comets finish the 2021 season with a 21-23 overall record.
Game One: Mayville State 4, Bellevue 0
The first hit of the game was in the top of the third inning when Madison Milligan singled to left field and then would advance on a one-out walk but a flyout and strikeout ended the inning. Mayville State finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning scoring one run on four hits and one Bruin error. Ontiveros doubled down the left-field line with one out, followed by an infield single followed by a throwing error that scored Ontiveros.
The Comets added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to give the Comets a 4-0 lead. Back-to-back hits from Duval and Kemball put runners on first and second with zero outs. After both runners advanced on an error and then a sacrifice fly to left field to score Duval. A two-out double from Roeges scored Kemball and then Roeges scored on a single from Tingey to give the Comets the 4-0 lead.
Kemball was dominant in the circle allowing one hit over seven innings of work and only allowing one hit in the fourth inning and retired the final 12 batters to advance to the final four. Jocelyn Ontiveros tallied 2 hits, drove in one run, and scored one run. Ashlyn Tingey tallied two hits and one run batted in. Madison Milligan started the hit parade with a single in the third inning. Shaye Kemball also tallied two hits and one run scored.
Game Two: Mayville State 2, Waldorf 3
Waldorf started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when a two-run home run was hit to center field. Mayville State would enter the scoring column in the top of the fifth inning when they scored one run on two hits. Ontiveros started the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Tingey singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw to put runners on second and third with one out. A groundout by Milligan scored one run but the Comets could not tie the game and left a runner in scoring position. Waldorf added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning on three hits to take a two-run lead heading into the final two innings.
Mackenzie Duval hit a triple to right field with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the lead to one. The Comets were shut down in the seventh inning and ended their season. The Comets tallied four hits in the second game. Dayna Gutierrez, Mackenzie Duval, Jocelyn Ontiveros, and Ashlyn Tingey each tallied one hit in the loss for the Comets. Kemball pitched her final game in a Comets uniform allowing seven hits, three earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.
The Comets will graduate four seniors from this year's roster: Shaye Kemball, Alissa Foster, Laura Spurgeon, Dayna Gutierrez.
