Comets advance to championship game with 6-4 victory over Bruins

Valley City, N.D. – The Comets advance to the Championship game after a 6-4 victory over Bellevue University Sunday afternoon. The Comets will play at 11:00 am Monday against the winner of the Bellevue and Dickinson State game.

The Comets were first on the scoreboard on Sunday scoring two runs in the top of the third inning on one hit. Villanueva reached on a walk with one out and advanced to third on two wild pitches. After a walk by Wohl, the Comets tried to squeeze home a run but the bunt was missed but the runner scored when the Villanueva slid into home and avoided the tag. McCorrister singled later in the inning to score Ferrera to take a 2-0 lead.

Mayville State added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning on four hits to take a 4-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, Garpestad singled to center field with a runner on second to score May. Two batters later, Wohl doubled down the left-field line to score Garpestad to extend the lead to four. Bellevue University got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning on one run and two hits.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Comets added two more runs to extend the lead to five. With runners on the corner with one out, Forst hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score McCorrister. Two batters later, Garpestad singled to left-center to score May. The Bruins scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on three hits. The Comets threatened to extend the lead in the top of the ninth inning when MSU put the first two runners on base. The next three batters would get out and end the threat. The Bruins would go down to put the Comets in the championship game.

Gunner Garpestad led the Comets in the victory recording, two hits, two runs batted in, and scored one run. Marcus Hughes recorded two hits for the Comets. Jared McCorrister tallied one hit, one run batted in, and scored one run. Marcus Wohl recorded two hits and one run batted in the game. Josh Rodriguez started on the mound allowing 3.2 innings pitched, allowing three hits, one earned run, two walks, and three strikeouts. Alex DeCaro tallied the win going 5.1 innings allowing three hits, three earned runs, zero walks, and four strikeouts.
