Comet Volleyball splits day two at Hastings College Tournament.

Hastings, Neb. – The Mayville State University Volleyball team picked up a split on the second day of the Hastings College Tournament on Saturday losing to Hastings College by a final of 3-0 and defeated Haskell Indian Nations in game two by a final of 3-0. The Comets move to 2-3 on the regular season and will return the court on Thursday night at Bellevue University Tournament. 

Game One: Hastings College 3, Mayville State 0

Hastings College started the first match clicking on all cylinders jumping out to a 9-4 lead on the Comets. The Comets could not get anything going against the Broncos in the first set as they would trailing by six or more points for most of the first set. Hastings would win the first set by a final score of 25-11.

Neither team held a lead larger than two at the start of the second set until the Broncos when on a 4-0 up 9-9 to extend the lead to five. Mayville State would tie the game at 14 when the Comets went on a 5-1 run highlighted by a kill from Pyburn. The Comets were trailing by two at 20-18 before MSU went on a 3-0 run to take a one-point lead. The Broncos finished the set on a 5-0 run to win the second set 25-22.

The Comets and Broncos were tied at seven in the third set when HC went on a 4-1 run to jump out to a three-point lead. The Comets would storm back and go on a 5-0 run to take a 2-0 lead. After the Comets gained a two-point lead, the Broncos went on a 7-3 run to take the lead back. MSU was trailing by three at 16-19 before a 3-0 run tied the game at 19. Hastings took a 24-21 lead on the Comets before back-to-back points to cut the lead to one before a kill from HC gave the Broncos the 3-0 sweep.

Elora Passa and Lily Pyle finished the first match with 10 kills. Passa also had 14 assists, 10 digs, and one service ace. Natalie Hadrava finished with 14 digs and Jordyn Lucas finished with 10 digs.

Game Two: Mayville State 3, Haskell Indian Nations 0

Mayville State started the second game fast as they were up 7-2 early in the set. HIN answered right back with a 10-2 run to take a three-point lead on MSU. After both teams traded points for the next seven points, MSU went on a 3-0 run off a couple of kills from Passa and Pyburn. Haskell answered that run from the Comets with a 5-1 run to take a three-point lead late in the second set. The Comets was down 25-24 when a service error and back-to-back kills from Pyle gave the Comets a first set victory 27-25.

Haskell started the second set with an 8-7 lead on the Comets before HIN went on a 3-0 lead to take an 11-7 lead on MSU. The Comets were trailing by four when they went on a 5-1 run to tie the game at 15. The Comets were up one late in the second set when Hill and Richards tallied back-to-back kills to take a three-point lead at 21-18. Mayville State would win the second set by a final of 21-25 off an attacking error by HIN.

Mayville State started the first set scoring four out of the first five points to take an early lead. Later in the set, the Comets were up by two points at 8-6 before a 10-2 run to jump out to an 18-8 lead on Haskell. The Comets finished the set on a 7-3 run to win the final set 25-12.

Ashley Pyburn finished with eight kills on 20 attempts for a .300 hitting percentage. Elora Passa finished with 14 kills, 17 assists, one blocking assist, and 11 digs. Natalie Hadrava finished with 18 digs, Jordyn Lucas finished with 17 digs, and Payton Richter finished with 11 digs and two service aces. Lily Pyle tallied nine kills for the Comets Rachel Hill recorded 18 assists and seven digs for the Comets.
