Comets defeat Wildcats on first day of Labor Day Classic

Omaha, Neb. – The Mayville State Volleyball team defeated Baker University in five sets on Thursday night by a final of 23-25 25-12 21-25 25-15 15-10. The Comets move to 3-3 through the first six games of the season.
 
Baker University scored the first four points of the first set before MSU went on an 11-2 run to jump out to a five-point advantage. The Comets were up to four before a 3-0 run to extend the lead 16-9. Right after the seven-point lead, Baker went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to two. Later in the set, MSU was up 20-17 before a 5-1 run to take a one-point lead at 22-21. The Wildcats picked up the first set victory 25-23.
 
The Comets started the second set on a 6-2 run to jump out to an early lead, during that run Sam Passa tallied a kill. Mayville State was up five points before BU started to make a comeback and cut the lead to one at 11-10. The Comets only allowed two points after that as they scored 13 out of 14 points to end the set. MSU tallied eight kills and one service ace during that run.
 
The Wildcats started the third set on an 8-3 run to jump out to the early lead. With the Comets down four points at 9-5, MSU went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to one highlighted by a block by Pyburn and Richard and a kill from Pyburn. Mayville State was trailing by three midway through the third set when they went on a 4-0 run highlighted by two blocks from Johnson. After the Comets took the lead, BU went on a 4-0 run to take a three-point lead and would take the third set 25-21.
 
After allowing the first two points, Mayville State would go on a 4-1 run to take a one-point lead tallied by three kills by three different players. Just like the second set, MSU would create some separation in the middle stages of the set highlighted by a 6-0 run to jump out to a five-point lead. With the Comets still up to five later in the set and extended that lead to eight off two errors from the Wildcats and a kill from Samantha Passa.
 
The Comets would force the fifth set after winning the fourth set 25-15. Baker started the final set up 4-1 before MSU went on a 6-1 run highlighted by Elora Passa three kills to take a three-point lead. MSU would extend the lead to five later in the set on kills from Passa and Johnson and would defeat the Wildcats 15-10.
 
MSU finished the game with 65 kills on 166 attempts with 22 errors for a .259 hitting percentage. The Comets also had 76 digs, 56 assists, 12 blocks, and four aces. Lily Pyle recorded 16 kills on 33 attempts with one error for a .455 hitting percentage. Elora Passa tallied 11 kills, 21 assists, three blocks, and 10 digs. Freshman Samantha Passa tallied 10 kills, one block, and 10 digs. Cora Johnson recorded nine kills and six blocks in the victory. Natalie Hadrava tallied 20 digs in the back row and Payton Richter tallied 16 digs. Rachel Hill recorded 27 assists for the Comets with six digs.
