Peru, Neb. – The Mayville State University Volleyball team split a doubleheader on the first day of the Bobcat Classic. The Comets move to 7-4 on the regular season.
Game One: Comets 3, Bethany College 0
The Comets and Swedes were tied at four early in the first set when MSU went on a 19-2 run to jump out to a 23-6 lead and take the first set 25-9. During that run, Samantha Passa served eight times and Jordyn Lucas served five times. Rian Richards tallied four kills during the large run in the first set.
The second set started the second set fast as well as they were up 9-3 in the early stages of the set. The Comets were up to four in the second set before a 6-2 run extended the lead to 18-10. Bethany College would continue to fight in the second set as they got the lead down to five multiple times but could not get over that mark and the Comets would take the second set by a score of 25-19.
The third set looked started out very good for Mayville State as they went on an 11-1 run to jump out to an eight-point advantage. Later in the set, MSU was only up four before a 5-0 run gave them a 21-12 advantage and would cruise to a 25-14 third set victory and the sweep. The Comets finished the game with a .227 hitting percentage, on 33 kills on 97 attacks. They also finished with 66 digs, 33 assists, five blocks, and five service aces.
Lily Pyle led the Comets with 13 kills in the first set with two errors and a .344 hitting percentage. Elora Passa tallied eight kills on six attempts for a .375 hitting percentage, 10 assists, and nine digs. Rian Richards tallied six kills with a .417 hitting percentage. Rachel Hill tallied 13 assists, eight digs, and two service aces. Payton Richter led the Comets with 16 digs in the back row and Natalie Hadrava tallied 15 digs.
Game Two: Comets 0, Dakota Wesleyan 3
The Comets were up 4-3 early in the first set when DWU went on a 5-0 run to take a four-point lead on MSU. After a kill from Pyburn, Dakota Wesleyan went on another run to jump out to a 14-7 lead. The Comets dropped the first set by a final of 25-15.
Mayville State was up one point in the second set before a 3-0 run extended the lead to four. Both teams traded points in the middle stages of the second set before a 3-0 run from the Tigers tied the game at 17. The Comets answered with a 3-0 to take a 20-17 lead late in the set. Dakota Wesleyan tied the game at 22 before MSU scored the next two points to give the Comets set points but DWU would answer with three straight points and take the second set in extra points 28-26. Dakota Wesleyan was up 4-3 on the Comets in DWU went on a 9-1 run to jump out to a 13-4 lead. MSU could not climb back into the match and would lose the third set by a final score of 25-17.
Lily Pyle led the Comets with seven kills, one block assists, and two digs. Elora Passa and Ashley Pyburn each tallied six kills. Passa also had 13 assists, eight digs. Natalie Hadrava and Jordyn Lucas each tallied 12 digs in the loss.
