Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Football team dropped a non-conference game Saturday to Wisconsin-Stevens Point by a final score of 31-14. MSU drops to 0-2 on the regular season as they head to South Dakota School of Mines next Saturday.
The Comets stopped the Pointers on the opening drive of the game but on the ensuing punt, MSU fumbled the ball and gave the UWSP good field position inside Mayville State territory. After allowing one first down on the drive, MSU would force a 43-yard field goal that was missed wide right. After a three and out for the MSU offense.
Stevens-Point would drive down the field and attempt a 42 yard field goal and for the second time in consecutive possessions, a missed field goal leaves the score at 0-0. The Comets would take advantage of the next possession as they drive the ball 75-yards in three plays to score the first touchdown of the game on a 71-yard touchdown pass from Salmon to Javeion Davison. The PAT was blocked so it was 6-0 Mayville State at the 6:00 minute mark of the first quarter.
On the ensuing possession for the Pointers, they drive the ball 64 yards down the field in 3:15 to tie the game at six on a touchdown pass. PAT was good and the Pointers took a one-point lead near the end of the first quarter. Wisconsin-Stevens Point would find the endzone again in the early stages of the second quarter to take an eight-point lead. Mayville State would answer right back and tie the game at 14 on a 15-play, 81-yard touchdown drive that was highlighted by a 3rd and 18 from the MSU 43 that resulted in a 19-yard completion to move the chains.
Tim Salmon threw his second touchdown pass to Maalik Flowers from 26-yards out to cut the lead to two. Austin Urlaub completed a pass to Josiah Walker on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14 with 2:00 minutes left in the half. The Pointers would kick a field goal with 29 seconds left in the half on a 32-yard field goal. The next possession started with an interception by UWSP in MSU territory to give them a chance with 15 seconds left in the half. The next play resulted in a 42-yard touchdown pass that gave UWSP a ten-point lead heading into the halftime break.
Mayville State's offense struggled in the third quarter only running 12 total plays in the quarter and going for a total of -9 yards. The first drive of the fourth quarter lasted 6:43 seconds but resulted in a turnover on downs at the 23-yard line of the Pointers. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point would put the finishing touches on the game midway through the fourth quarter on a nine-play 77-yard touchdown drive to extend the lead to 17.
Mayville State finished the game with 13 total yards rushing, 222 passing yards, 235 total yards, and 13 total first downs. The Comet defense allowed 127 yards on the ground, 284 passing yards, and 19 first downs. Time Salmon completed nine passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Gavin Goulette competed 10 passes in his first game as a Comets throwing for 68 yards. Cole Dukart led the rushing attack with 22 total yards rushing.
Javeion Davison recorded five receptions for 109 yards and one touchdown and Maalik Flowers tallied seven receptions for 68 yards and one touchdown. Leading the way on the defensive side was Austin DeLaroque finishing with four solo tackles, eight assist tackles, and 1.0 tackles for loss. Travyen Brownlee finished with six solo tackles and three assisting tackles in the loss. Josiah Walker tallied seven total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1.0 sacks.
