Comets Sweep Warriors on the Road

Forest City, Iowa - The Comets Volleyball team continued its North Star road trip to Forest City, Iowa to take on the Waldorf Warriors. Mayville State quickly dispatched the Warriors in straight sets to even their conference record.

:Although we played good volleyball Thursday night, the loss was very unsettling. So to turn around and be able to win in 3 sets on Friday was good for us. Especially since we won't have a conference game for a while now," said head coach Katie Aasen, post game.

Set one  started with the Comets flying out to a 5-1 advantage. Waldorf stormed back with an 8-1 run of their own which included multiple service aces.

With the Warriors holding a slim 9-8 lead, Natalie Hadrava went to work. Behind her two aces and five kills by Abby Cox, Mayville State scored 11 consecutive points to take a commanding 20-9 lead. A Madison McKinnon kill finished off the first set with Mayville State winning handily 25-12.

In Set two, Mayville State was able to bust open a close game late to win 25-19. Waldorf showed no signs of surrender down two sets and held a 22-19 lead, but the Comets closed with a 6-1 rally to get the sweep 25-23.

"In the third set, we made a comeback from behind toward the end of the set which is hard to do," said Aasen. "Being on the road a lot can be tough, especially with academics, but it also has its advantages too. We love our home court atmosphere but we also know how to win when we don't have that."

Elora Passa filled up the box score with another triple double of 10 kills, 19 assists and 10 digs. Cox, McKinnon and Samantha Passa each contributed nine kills, Payton Richter added 16 assists and Hadrava collected three aces and 16 digs.

"We have seven seniors who have recognized how precious each game is and ultimately they just want to play volleyball and win games," state Aasen.

The win puts the Comets record to 12-6 and 3-3 in the North Star Conference. Mayville State will take on GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan next Thursday in Mitchell, S.D. First serve is 6:00pm.
