MBB rolls to win against Trinity Bible with season high score of 117-64

Mayville, N.D. - The Comets Men's Basketball team faced off against the Trinity Bible College Lions at the Lewy Lee on Tuesday. Mayville State dominated inside en route to a 117-64 win.

"We played well as a group and had contributions from every player.. All 15 guys that played scored and we had 58 points from our bench," said head coach Brandon McGruder.

The Comets offense took a few minutes to get rolling but ripped off 15 straight points in a three minute stretch to turn a slim 6-5 lead into a 21-5 advantage.

Later in the first half, Mayville State went on another big run, outscoring the Lions 14-1 to open up a 30 point lead at 43-13. The teams played relatively even down the stretch and the Comets finished the first half with a 64-31 lead.

Mayville State shot 58% and out rebounded the Lions 30-10 in the first half. John White Jr. poured in 15 to pace Mayville State.

The Comets started the second half on a 9-2 run to bump the lead to 40 at 73-33, but Trinity responded with a 9-0 run of their open to nullify that run.

The Comets lead stayed in the thirties for most of the second half.

Mayville State's pace and depth wore out the Lions towards the end of the game, as the Comets finished the game on a 24-5 streak behind Leomar Castillo's seven points and Devin Griffin's four assists. Castillo's jumper with four minutes left got the Comets over the century mark, and Mayville State went on to win comfortably 117-64.

The Comets scored a remarkable 76 points in the paint and controlled the glass with a 56-25 rebound advantage. The Comets had all 15 players score and had 58 bench points.

White Jr. finished with 17 points to lead all scorers. JC Canahuate racked up a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists. Jesse Bergh also added 14 points and Thomas Gieske reached double figures with 12. Gieske, Jamison Kramer and Keyshaun Bolen grabbed seven rebounds each.

McGruder added, "I was glad to see Jesse find his rhythm tonight. He had 14 & 5 in just 10 minutes of action which is extremely impressive. We'll need him to be efficient if we want to be good in league play."

The win gives the Comets a 10-2 record on the season. Mayville State will play South Dakota State University next on December 14th.
