Mayville, N.D. - The Comets Women's Basketball team faced the Trinity Bible College Lions at the Lewy Lee on Tuesday.
Jordan Zrust became the first basketball player in Mayville State history to score 2000 points as the Comets romped to a 94-37 victory.
"It's always a great atmosphere when we play at home. This is only our fourth home game and we have been on the road almost all of November so it's good to finally play in front of our home crowd again," said assistant coach
Claire Blascziek.
The Comets pressured the Lions into several turnovers early in the game and raced out to a 21-0 lead. After Trinity scored their first basket, Mayville State scored the last eight points of the quarter to lead 29-2. The Comets forced 16 turnovers in the quarter and held Trinity to 10% shooting.
Mayville State continued to dominate the game in the second quarter. With 6:54 left until halftime, Zrust connected on a three pointer to hit the 2000 point mark. The Lions went on a 5-0 run later in the quarter, only to see the Comets score the last 13 points of the half. Mayville State went into the locker room leading 55-9.
The Comets utilized the three point line in the third quarter, as they hit 6 of 13 from deep.
Greta Hillukka made all three of her attempts to lead Mayville State with 9 points.
The Lions kept playing hard and even ripped off a 9-0 run in the quarter. However, the Comets still commanded a 76-20 advantage.
11 Comets played in the final quarter, as
Taylor Dean and
Kayla Rocholl combined for 12 points and three assists. To their credit, Trinity played hard right through to the end, and kept pace with Mayville State in the fourth. However, the Comets cruised to a 94-37 victory.
Blascziek commented, "I thought that we played loose offensively and we were able to get great shots when we moved the ball and played together. I also think we had great energy from the start of warm ups all the way until the end of the game."
The Comets poured in 16 three pointers, dished out 26 assists and collected 26 steals in the game. Hillukka led the way with 18 points, followed closely by Rocholl with 16. Both achieved their career highs in points this game.
Zrust added 13 points, six steals and five assists and
Mackenzie Hughes finished with 10.
