Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB gets road win against Valley 96-76

Valley City, N.D. - The Comets Men's Basketball team battled their nemesis the Valley City Vikings on Wednesday evening. Mayville State poured in 63 points in the first half enroute to a comfortable conference victory.

The Comets set the tone in the first five minutes of the game, led by senior Jamison Kramer. Kramer scored nine quick points and led the Comets to a 16-2 lead.

Mayville State continued to score at will, with a John White Jr. triple extended the lead to 31-10 halfway through the first half. The Comets stretched the lead at one point to 58-32 with just under three minutes remaining and finished the half ahead 63-39.

The Comets shot 68 percent from the filed in the first half and 78 percent from the three point line. Kramer led the way with 15 points followed closely by White Jr. with 14.

The Comets cooled off in the second half, but also turned up the defensive intensity to prevent the Vikings from mounting any sort of comeback. The lead never dropped below 19 points in the second half as Mayville State controlled the pace.

The Comets stayed undefeated in conference play with the 96-76 win.

"They played with the most energy and focus I've seen from them all year. I was extremely proud of everyone's energy and unselfishness. I thought we guarded their ball screens extremely well and rebounded with some toughness," said head coach Brandon McGruder.

Kramer and Thomas Gieske paved the way for the Comets offense with 21 points apiece. Kramer hauled down 13 rebounds to notch his third double-double of the season. White Jr. finished with 17 points on the night, Jacob Strand came off the bench to hit 11 points and Juan Carlos Canahuate added seven rebounds and five assists.

The win boosts the Comets record to 15-3 overall, 3-0 in the NSAA. Mayville State travels west to take on the Dickinson State Blue Hawks on Saturday, tip off is 6:00pm Central Time.
