Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comets WBB beats Valley on the road 95-76

Valley City, N.D. - The newly ranked #13 Comets Women's Basketball team traveled to Valley City to battle the Vikings in a North Star conference match up. A dominant second quarter propelled Mayville State to a 19 point victory.

Both teams started the game sizzling from the field. The Comets raced out to an early 11-5 advantage, but Valley City stormed back with 10 straight points to retake the lead. The score stayed close as both teams scored at will. The Comets poured in 30 points in the first quarter but only led by four at 30-26.

The Vikings scored the first five points of the second quarter to once again claim the lead at 31-30 one minute into the stanza. The Comets responded with perhaps their best stretch of their season.

Mayville State went on a 27-3 run in those nine minutes to turn the game into a one-sided affair. Jordan Zrust and Mackenzie Hughes combined for 21 of those 27 points, scoring from every area of the court. The Comets went into the locker room ahead 57-34.

The Comets maintained their lead through the first part of the 3rd quarter, as an Alex Page triple gave the Comets a 65-44 lead with four and a half minutes left.

The Vikings chipped away at that lead the rest of the quarter, as they used a 12-4 stretch to get within 69-56. Mayville State managed to stabilize and bump the lead to 16 with 10 minutes to go at 76-60.

The fourth quarter played relatively even, as the Comets lead held between 17 and 21 points for most of the quarter. Zrust continued to shred the Viking interior defense and Greta Hillukka supported with three pointers.

The buzzer sounded with the Comets winning the game 95-76.

"It was a fun environment for our team to play in and I thought that we had good energy from the start of warm ups all the way until the end of the game. I have been emphasizing having energy all week in practice. I also thought that we adjusted in the game well when we needed to. Offensively we shared the ball and played with pace and patience, giving us good looks," said assistant coach Claire Blascziek.

Mayville State shot 51% from the field and connected on 14 of 25 three pointers. Zrust poured in a season high of 36 points and also pulled down nine boards.

Hughes finished with 19 and six steals, Hillukka nailed six triples for 18 points and Page reached double figures with 12. CJ Decker added five assists on the night.

The Comets record now stands at 14-2, 3-0 in conference play. Mayville State continues their road schedule against the Dickinson Blue Hawks on Saturday, tip off at 4:00 pm Central Time.
