Football falls to Vikings 10-6 Saturday

Valley City, N.D. - Mayville State Comet Football headed to Valley City Saturday afternoon to take on the Vikings for their final road game of the season.

It was a low scoring first half where the Comets would be the only ones to score. Kaden Johnson kicked a 25 yard field goal late in the first quarter.

Mayville State was the first to score in the second half after Johnson nailed a 37 yard field goal, putting the Comets up 6-0 midway through the third quarter.

Valley City quickly responded, going 96 yards in just 8 plays for a touch down. Their extra point was good and the Vikings took the lead 7-6 entering the fourth quarter.

With two minutes remaining the Vikings kicked a 38 yard field goal, extending their lead 10-6.

Valley City then kicked off for 62 yards, putting the Comets on their own 3 yard line in what would be their final drive of the game.

Back up quarterback, Aiden Marcussen, with his first start of the season looked to muster something up offensively.

With 1:57 remaining on the clock, Marcussen would move the chains with a completed pass for 17 yards to Javeion Davison putting them at the Mayville 22.

With a 4th & 1 the Comets would have a holding penalty making it 4th & 11. Marcussen would then be sacked, and that would be the ball game.

Mayville State finished with 88 yards rushing and 70 passing, completing 9 of 12 with one interception.

Mason Ollman led the team with 55 rushing yards, his longest was 19.

Maalik Flowers had 25 yards, his longest was 13 and close behind him was Daniel Nevil with 20 rushing yards, his longest being 18.

Javeion Davison had 4 receptions for 26 yards.

The Comets will host Dakota State University this Saturday in their final game of the season; kick off is set for 4:00pm.

The winner of Saturday's game secures 2nd place in the North Star and head coach, Rocky Larson, looks to finish the season 5-5.
