Morris, Minn. - Mayville State Comets women's basketball hit the road Tuesday night for a non-conference rematch against the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars.
A strong first half by sophomore
Hannah Stark propelled the Comets to a 95-68 win. The Comets improve to 7-1 overall.Â
"We had a lot of great individual performances tonight, but what was more impressive to me was the balance that we showed," said head coach Ryan Carpenter. "We had five players in double figures and nine players who hit a 3 tonight. We got hot early and were able to pour in 63 points in the first half and knocked down fourteen threes."
Mackenzie Hughes and
Alex Page combined for a quick 17 points in the first quarter to help get the Comets out to a 27-20 lead after the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the offense would explode and the Comets would put up 36 points. Their defense would even be better, as they held the Cougars to just 11 points. Mayville State headed into the locker room at halftime leading 63-31.Â
Stark would go 3-3 from behind the arc to get to a first half, scoring 17 points.
Jes Mertens had 3 steals in the first quarter and 4 steals in the second to put her at 7 at the half.Â
The third quarter would be an even match up as the Comets scored 24 and Morris scored 23. The fourth quarter would lack offense on both ends of the court as Mayville State scored just 11 points and Morris just 14.Â
Mertens continued to shine for the Comets in just about every category. She had another double-double on the season, this one consisting of 12 points and 11 assists. She also had 8 steals and 5 rebounds on the night.
Stark led the Comets with 17 points. She made a career high 5 buckets from behind the arc.Â
Alex Page & Hughes put up 16 points a piece. Page added 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks.
Annika Reierson scored 6 points and snagged 8 rebounds, adding 3 assists.Â
"When we are shooting the ball as good as we did tonight we are going to be incredibly tough to beat regardless of if we are at home or on the road," added Carpenter. "I am glad we got to play everyone extended minutes tonight and get our starters a little extra rest as we prep for our trip to Montana this weekend."
The Comets will have a quick turnaround this weekend. They hit the road this Friday to take on #21 Carroll College followed by (RV) Rocky Mountain College on Saturday.Â
