Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB falls to Waldorf; Will be 2nd seed in NSAA Tournament

Forest City, Iowa - The Comets Men's Basketball team finished up the regular season with a Saturday game against the Waldorf Warriors. In a defensive struggle, the Warriors made just enough shots to escape with a 65-59 win.

"We played hard tonight and left it all on the court. Our free throw woes traveled with us going 1-6 in the second half and 5-12 for the game," said head coach Brandon McGruder.

Mayville State started ice cold from the field, as they missed 10 of their first 11 shots. This cold streak put the Comets in an 8-2 hole six minutes into the game.

Mayville State got the offense rolling at the nine minute mark, as they went on a 14-3 run to turn an 18-11 deficit into a 25-21 lead. Thomas Gieske and Jamison Kramer combined for 11 points during this stretch.

A Kramer triple bumped the lead to 32-24 with three minutes left and Mayville State went into the locker room ahead 36-30. Kramer (10) and Gieske (8) contributed half of the team's total points.

The Warriors grabbed the momentum early in the second half with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 40. The teams went blow for blow after that, as neither team held a lead of larger than four points until the final seconds.

There were multiple lead changes and ties. With two minutes remaining, a Darren Jones free throw got the Comets within a point at 60-59, but Mayville State could not buy a basket the rest of the way.

"We did a great job of keeping their bigs off the glass in the first half and held them to one offensive rebound but gave up six second chance points in the second half," added McGruder.

Waldorf went 5 for 7 from the free throw line the rest of the way to eke out the victory.

Neither team could find their mark for the game, as the Comets shot only 33% and held the Warriors to only 38%.

Kramer led all scorers with 18 points and also added seven rebounds and five assists. Jones reached double figures with 11 points and seven boards, while Gieske pulled down nine rebounds.

"It was a tough weekend but we would have been the 2 seed regardless. Now it's time to focus on Valley City and winning the tournament," said McGruder.

The Comets finish the regular season at 19-7 and 7-5 in the North Star. Mayville State earns the #2 seed and will host Valley City State on Wednesday, February 21st.
