Box Score La Crosse, WI - The No. 12 Comets Women's Basketball team hit the road to finish off their regular season, and their first stop was Wisconsin to take on the Viterbo V-Hawks. Mayville State used a dominant third quarter to pull away from the V-Hawks and win 72-49.

The V-Hawks were able to get out to a slight lead five minutes in, but the Comets buried four consecutive three pointers to turn a 7-5 deficit into a 17-8 lead. Viterbo started to claw back into the game by scoring the last four points of the quarter to trail 17-12.

Viterbo continued their run in the second quarter, as they scored the first five points of the stanza to complete a 9-0 run and tied the game at 17.

With just under four minutes left to halftime and the score knotted at 23, the Comets ripped off 10 consecutive points to take a 33-23 lead. CJ Decker scored eight of those 10 crucial points.

Mayville State went into the halftime break ahead 33-25.

The Comets defense tightened the screws to open the third quarter as they allowed only two points in the first five minutes. Jes Mertens sparked the offense with five points during the 13-2 run to open the period, which put the Comets ahead 46-27.

Mayville State forced seven turnovers and harried the V-Hawks into 25% shooting for the quarter, which expanded their advantage to 59-32 heading into the fourth.

Viterbo chopped the lead to 22, but the Comets responded with a 9-0 run to boost the lead back to 31 with two minutes to play and comfortably cruised to the 72-49 victory.

"We kind of started slow and had to weather their emotion of senior night. Once the game hit a flow I really liked the way we played. We defended well once again, which is good to see as we head towards the end of the regular season. The defensive effort was solid all game long. Now we need to complete the weekend," commented head coach Dennis Hutter.

Jordan Zrust collected another double-double on the season as she scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Mertens added 11 points and nine rebounds and four other Comets scored 8-9 points for a balanced offensive attack. Decker handed four assists, Mackenzie Hughes racked up four steals and Erin Walcker finished with three blocked shots.

The win bumps the Comets record to 21-3, 10-1 in conference. Mayville State completes their regular season at Waldorf on Saturday. A win guarantees the Comets at least a share of the regular season conference title! tip off is at 3:00pm.
