Yankton, S.D. - The Comets Baseball team looked to rebound on Sunday with another doubleheader against the Mount Marty Lancers. Mayville State fell 8-0 in game one then lost a heart breaker for the finale 8-7.
"Overall on the series the disappointment truly comes from the mistakes we made that have been worked on, talked about and practiced for the last six weeks. We are a much better team than what we showed this weekend but it's going to take a commitment from the players and coaches to get this straightened out," said head coach
Billy Tomblin.
Game 1:
In game one, neither team could get a runner across in the first two innings. The Lancers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with an RBI single.
In the fourth, Mount Marty sent 12 men to the plate and pushed across seven runs, which made the score 8-0 after four innings. Mayville State could not push any runners across in the last three innings and the game ended at 8-0.
Chris Shopbell got a hit and stolen base, and Jake Patten pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Comets.
Game 2:
Mayville State looked to bounce back in game two. In the top of the second, the Comets erupted for seven runs.
Zachary Evanochko single and
Caleb Jamieson coaxed a walk.
Teigen Parenteau singled in Evanochko for the first run of the game. Jamieson scored on a double steal, with pitch runner
Carson Lundmark to second.
Ricky Marquez walked, then quickly stole second while Lundmark swiped second. Lundmark scored on an error that put
Tanner Boyle on base. After a
Riley Rankin walk, the bases were loaded for Shopbell. Shopbell uncorked a GRAND SLAM to clear the bases and gave the Comets a 7-0 lead.
The Lancers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run, then added two more in the fifth inning, which cut the deficit to 7-3.
Mount Marty's hitters came up clutch in the sixth inning. With two runs in already, a bases clearing double gave the Lancers an 8-7 lead. The Comets could not tie the game in the seventh, which allowed Mount Marty to escape with the 8-7 victory.
Shopbell with 2 for 4 which included the grand slam. Both Lundmark and Marquez racked up two stolen bases.
"We are on a short week this week, we bounce back on Friday and Saturday against Hastings, so we have about five and a half hours to reflect on the weekend but when the bus hits Mayville, it's time to turn the page and get back to work," added Tomblin.
The Comets record now stands at 2-9. Mayville State travels to Nebraska next weekend to face the Hastings College Broncos for four games.
