Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Comets WBB improves to 18-3 on the season, 7-1 in NSAA play after win over Blue Hawks Saturday

Mayville, ND - The No. 12 Comets Women's basketball team looked to sweep the weekend with a North Star conference match up against the Dickinson State Bluehawks. The duo of Jordan Zrust and Mackenzie Hughes combined for 51 points in a comfortable 75-41 victory.

The Comets defense dictated the first quarter. Mayville State held the Bluehawks scoreless for over seven minutes to turn a slim 6-4 advantage into a 14-4 lead.

That stretch included eight straight missed shots for the Bluehawks as well as four turnovers. Dickinson scrounged up a couple baskets at the end of the quarter to trim the deficit to 14-8.

Zrust and Hughes took over the offense in the second quarter, as they combined for 16 of the Comets 22 points. Both connected on two triples and Zrust got to the rim for two more baskets.

Mayville State doubled their lead from the first quarter and went into the locker room ahead 36-24.

The defense clamped down once again in the third quarter and harried the Bluehawks into 27% shooting. Mayville State ripped off a 9-2 run midway through the quarter to push their lead to 47-29. Zrust and Hughes continued to drive the offense and combined for 15 more points and entered the last 10 minutes ahead 55-33.

Mayville State stifled any sort of Bluehawk comeback with an 18-3 run in the fourth to boost the lead to 73-36. The dynamic duo finished their stellar night by scoring 10 of the first 12 points of that rally and went to the bench to an ovation.

The defense remained stout for the rest of the contest as the Comets cruised to the 75-41 win.

Zrust finished the game with 27 points, followed closely by Hughes with 24. Jes Mertens corralled 12 rebounds and handed out seven assists.

"I thought we defended very well again tonight. Our on ball defense was very strong. It took us a while to get an offensive rhythm but when we did, I thought we played well at both ends. It was nice to complete the weekend sweep and it should be fun next Friday," said head coach Dennis Hutter.

The Comets record now stands at 18-3 and 7-1 in conference play. Next Friday the #8 Dakota Trojans come to the Lewy Lee for a critical North Star showdown. Tip off is at 5:30pm.
