Baseball wraps up conference opening series against Dakota State

Madison, S.D – Mayville State Comets Baseball looked to battled back in games 3 and 4 of the 4 game series versus Dakota State Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: L 9-0

The Comets offense would struggle to get things going all game. Mayville state had just 4 hits in game 1.

The bottom of the third and bottom of the sixth would both be big innings for the Trojans where they would combine for 9 runs in those two innings.

Chris Shopbell keeps up his offensive consistency going after he went 2-2 with a single and a double. Teigen Parenteau had the only other hit in the game.

Derek Palmiere got a start on the mound today for the Comets. He went 5 innings giving up 7 runs on 7 hits.

"We lack a lot of courage on the baseball field, coaches included. This is not a player only issue, this starts at the top and runs downhill. We are a team and every single person within this program needs to start making some adjustments if we want to see this season turn around," said head coach Billy Tomblin.

Game 2: L 18-8

The Comets would look to bounce back in game 2 of the day. They would strike first after Marcus Hughes would lead the game off with a hit by pitch and Carson Lundmark would later be able to drive him in with a single to right.

Mayville State would be quiet for the next 3 innings, but the Trojans would tack on 4 and lead 4-1 going into the top of the 5th.

Leading off in the top of the 5th, Hughes drew a walk, Ricky Marquez singled to right and Carson Lundmark was able to score Marquez off of a single to left.

Two errors would allow the Comets to add two more runs in the inning. The score would be 4-4 going into the bottom of the 5th.

The Trojans would plate 2 in the bottom of the fifth off of a couple errors and walks putting them in the lead 6-4 heading into the 6th.

The Comets would score four runs in the top of the 6th off of a GRAND SLAM by Carson Lundmark, taking the lead 8-6.

The Trojans would break loose in the bottom of the 6th scoring 8 runs on 3 hits and 5 errors. They would tack on 4 more runs on 5 hits in the 7th taking the game 18-8.

Michael Curl would start on the mound but quickly be replaced by Calvin Watkins. Connor Cory would pitch 3.1 innings of the game and Gunner Thompson would come in at the end to finish out the last inning.

Mayville State scored 8 runs on 6 hits.

Carson Lundmark went 3-4 with 2 runs and 6 RBIs, 1 HR
Ricky Marquez went 2-3 with 2 runs scored

"At some point you start running out of things to say. It's the same story I have been sharing all season and we are still stuck on the first page. We need to turn the page and we need to do it now," said Tomblin.
