Lamoni, Iowa – The Comets Baseball headed down to Lamoni Iowa this weekend to take on Graceland University (IA) & University of Saint Mary (KS).
Mayville State fell to Graceland in game one 11-1 and Saint Mary made a 7
th inning come back beating the Comets 10-7.
"As stated in previous weeks, we continue to be our own worst enemy of the field. There is a standard here, something I have referenced before, that is not being met and it starts with me. I am not meeting it and I am not pushing this team in the direction it needs to go," said head coach
Billy Tomblin. "I need to start finding a way to elevate this team to play our brand of baseball with the guys who are committed to playing that brand of baseball too."
Game 1 vs. Graceland – L 11-1
Anthony Villanueva tripled in the 3
rd inning scoring
Ricky Marquez which tied up the game 1-1. That would be the only run that the Comets plated all game.
Connor Cory took the start for the Comets and pitched just over 4 innings where he allowed 8 hits and 7 runs. He struck out 6 on the day.
Brady Robinson came in for Cory and pitched a little over an inning where he gave up 4 hits, 4 runs and 3 walks. He struck out two while on the mound.
Graceland's pitcher Mason Krogsgaar pitched 6 innings holding off the Comets' offense by only giving up 4 hits and 1 run.
Michael Feralio went 1-2 with a walk
Ricky Marquez went 2-2 with a run
Anthony Villanueva went 1-3 with an RBI
Game 2 vs. University of Saint Mary – L 10-7
It was an offensive day for both teams as Saint Mary racked up 15 hits and the Comets had 14.
In the second inning,
Sam Hilgersom single up the middle scoring
Avery Kirkup tying the game up at one a piece.
Not too long after that,
Marcus Hughes doubled to left center to score Hilgersom which was then followed by a
Riley Rankin single to score Hughes.
During the third inning Zach Evanochko had a SAC fly to center field scoring
Carson Lundmark to make the score 4-1.
Saint Mary put up 2 runs in the fourth but Mayville State answered with an RBI from Villanueva.
Heading into the fifth with the score 5-3, the Comets waste no time and add on two more runs for insurance.
Mayville State was able to hold off Saint Mary until the 7
th inning where they would put up 7 runs to take the lead 10-7. The Comets could not come back in the bottom of the 7
th.
Austin McClure started on the mound for the Comets, scattering 8 hits in 3 innings allowing 3 runs and striking out 6.
5 different Comets drove in runs and Mayville State had 14 hits.
Marcus Hughes went 3-5 with 2 RBI, 2B & SB
Chris Shopbell went 2-4 with 1 RBI, SB
Anthony Villanueva went 2-4 with 1 RBI
Riley Rankin went 1-3 with 1 RBI, HBP, SB
Zachary Evanochko went 2-3 with 1 RBI
"I have not lost any hope in what this team has the potentional to do, but we all know what potential means. We have an opportunity to get back on the field tomorrow and see what we can do as today is done and we cannot get it back," added Tomblin.
Mayville State is back in action tomorrow where they will take on Graceland for two games, first pitch is set for 1:00pm.
