Comet Baseball drops home opener against Vikings

Mayville, ND – Mayville State Baseball had their home opener Saturday against conference rival Valley City State.

Despite going extra innings in the second game, Valley City would be able to snag two from the Comets.

Game 1: L 1-4
Things would be quiet for both teams until the bottom of the third when Carson Lundmark led things off with a double.

Chris Shopbell would follow up with an RBI single, scoring Lundmark to get the Comets on the board first.

The Vikings immediately responded in the top of the 4th with back-to-back singles to start things off. Valley City would then hit a 3-run home run to take the lead 3-1.

Valley City was able to score with two outs in the top of the 6th to extend their lead 4-1.

In the bottom of the 7th, Ricky Marquez would draw a lead off walk, but the Vikings would shut the Comets down 1-2-3 and take the win 4-1.

The Vikings held the Comets to just 1 run on 5 hits.

Chris Shopbell went 2-4, 1 RBI
Carson Lundmark went 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB
 
Austin McClure got the start for Mayville State. He had an impressive outing holding Vikings to just 6 hits and striking out 8.
 
Game 2: L 6-8 (12 innings)
Game two had a bit more offense and would end in a ping pong match that went for 12 innings.
 
The Vikings took an early lead in the top of the 2nd when they hit a two run home run.
 
Mayville State got on the board in the bottom of the 4th when Marcus Hughes led the inning off with a double. Lundmark would move him to third and Chris Shopbell would hit a SAC fly to left making it a 2-1 ball game.
 
Valley City snagged another run in the 6th, 7th & 9th innings to extend their lead 5-1.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Carson Lundmark started the rally by hitting a double followed up by Shopbell drawing a walk.

Riley Rankin, Anthony Villanueva and Michael Feralio hit three singles in a row cutting the Comets deficit to 4-5.
 
With two outs, Marquez hit a single scoring Villanueva to tie the game. The Vikings would get out number three and the game headed to the 10th.
 
Neither team could score in the 10th, however, the Vikings were able to plate a run in the 11th making the score 5-6.
 
With bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th, the score 5-6, Shopbell drew a walk to tie the game. The Vikings would get out of the inning and we would head into the 12th.
 
A walk and a home run was all it took for the Vikings to take the lead 8-6. They were able to hold off the Comets and take the second game of the day.
 
Both Mayville State and the Vikings would tally 11 hits in game two.
 
Marcus Hughes went 2-5, 1 2B, 1 BB
Chris Shopbell went 1-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Michael Feralio went 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B
 
Riley Rankin, Anthony Villanueva & Ricky Marquez would all have 1 RBI each.
 
Gregor Farquharson started on the mound for the Comets. He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings, striking out 3.
 
Connor Cory came in relief for Farquharson, going 5 innings giving up 5 runs on 8 hits. He also struck out 3.
 
The Comets are back in action tomorrow for their final home games of the season. This will also be the final two games of conference play. First pitch is set for 1pm.
 
Mayville State will celebrate 12 seniors tomorrow between innings in both games.
