Mayville, N.D. - Coming off of their huge win on the road against Jamestown last week, the Comets football team looked to take one from the Vikings on Farmer's Bowl/Homecoming weekend.
In what would be a thrilling game that came down to the wire, the Comets would come away with the win 16-10. The Comets time of possession was 42:49 compared to a Vikings 16:17.
The Grove Tailgating area was sold out and extra spots were made for 1000+ tailgaters who enjoyed pregame festivities like the Corn Feed and bouncy houses.
Head coach
Rocky Larson said, "It was the best game day atmosphere that I have seen in my 5 years of being here. Thank you to all the Comet fans for coming out and making yesterday memorable!"Â
How it happened:
Midway through the first quarter,
Jack Simmers rushed for a huge 29 yards to get the Comets to Valley City's 24Â yard line. This would set things up for
Javeion Davison to eventually run 8 yards in for a touch down, followed up by a
Kaden Johnson extra point to give the Comets a 7-0 lead.
In their first possession of the second quarter, the Vikings managed to have a 65 yard run, putting them on Mayville's 6. Valley City then was able to tie things up with a 4 yard rushing touchdown and good extra point.
In the next drive, the Comets would get all the way down to the Valley City 1 yard line, but the Vikings would hold them to just a field goal. Heading into halftime the Comets led 10-7.
The Vikings would take the ball at the start of the third quarter but would be in and out in just three plays.
They punted from their own 27, however,
Mason Ollman came up with a huge block and it would be recovered in the end zone by
Hudson Stone, extending the Comets lead 16-7. Johnson's extra point would be no good.
Late in the fourth, the Vikings managed to get a field goal to cut their deficit to 10-16, but the Comets would shut them down for the rest of the game.Â
The Comets had not beat the Vikings since 2015, where they won 14-13 on the road. The last time they beat Jamestown & Valley City State in the same season was 1995.
Head Coach Rocky Larson's Comments:
- Proud of how far our offense has come the past two weeks. We have found a new identity and our offensive line has taken a big step forward.
- Defense put together another really good performance. They only had to defend 38 snaps but they made the most of them.
- Blocked punt from Mason Ollman was a huge play in the game. Our special teams have done an outstanding job this year.
Daniel Nevil 23 carries for 124 yards
Jack Simmers had 18 carries for 69 yards
Javeion Davison had 6 carries for 26 yards with 1 TD
Bryson Plueger had 1 sack and 2 solo tackles
Mason Ollman had 10 carries for 21 yards, 1 blocked punt
The Comets move to 3-2 on the season and will have two weeks on the road at Dakota State & Dickinson followed by a bye week before they return home on October 26th, where they will host Jamestown.
