MAYVILLE, N.D. — A strong first quarter wasn't enough for Mayville State on Friday night, as the Comets fell 72–49 to NCAA Division II Minot State in a non-conference match up at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
Mayville State opened the game composed, shooting 55 percent in the first period and edging ahead 17–14 behind eight quick points from Misti Zempel. Freshman Whitney Welk added two key baskets off the bench to help the Comets build a nine-point lead midway through the frame.
But the Beavers responded with steady perimeter shooting and a dominant third quarter that ultimately sealed the game. Minot State knocked down 13 three pointers on the night and outscored the Comets 26–15 in the third period.
Zempel led Mayville State with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. Welk delivered 10 points and four rebounds in 19 productive minutes, while freshman Bella Kanz scored seven and grabbed three boards. Freshman Laela Jensen added eight points and three steals.
Mayville State held its own on the glass through three quarters and forced 16 Minot State turnovers, but the Beavers' outside efficiency proved the difference. Minot State shot 43 percent from the field and 33 percent from deep, while limiting the Comets to five made threes and 30 percent shooting overall.
The Comets will return home November 18th to open up their Frontier Conference play as they host Valley City State at 5:00pm.
