Madison, S.D. — Mayville State showed early composure and competitiveness on Friday night, but a powerful third-quarter surge from No. 4 Dakota State sent the Comets to a 92–51 defeat in Frontier Conference action at the DSU Fieldhouse in Madison.
The Comets trailed 22–15 after a solid opening quarter in which they matched the Trojans on the boards and generated balanced scoring.
Misti Zempel provided an early spark, scoring four first-quarter points and battling for loose rebounds, while guard
Whitney Welk added a key three-pointer to keep Mayville within single digits.
Mayville State continued to battle in the second quarter, but offensive challenges emerged as Dakota State tightened its perimeter defense. The Comets were held to eight points in the period and entered halftime down 41–23.
Dakota State used the opening minutes of the third quarter to pull away for good. The Trojans hit five three-pointers in the frame and outscored Mayville 33–13, turning turnovers into transition opportunities and stretching the lead beyond 30.
Hannah Stark finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
Bella Kanz contributed 6 points and 7 rebounds while Zempel led the Comets with 10 points.
Mayville State posted 13 second-chance points and received 23 points from its bench. However, the Comets struggled to convert consistently, shooting 27 percent from the field and 18 percent from beyond the arc.
