Bellevue, Neb. - Mayville State Comets Baseball looked to split the series with the Bruins on Saturday after falling Friday in both games. The Bruins would be too much for the Comets to handle and take the series sweep.
"We knew coming into the weekend that Bellevue was going to be a challenge," said head coach
Billy Tomblin. "It's not a secret that they are a well coached and very talented team. When you play teams like that you have to play a very clean baseball game to give yourself a chance. I talked about how poorly we took care of the ball yesterday and how essential it is for our success. Unfortunately, we continued to not take care of the ball again today."
Game 3: L 7-15
- The Bruins led the bottom of the first off by scoring 6 runs on 3 hits, an error, a HBP and a pair of walks
- The Comets see some life in the top of the 3rd with a 2 out single by
Cameron Goff plating 1 run
-
Jalen Denton reached on a Bruin error and
Carson Lundmark is able to score making it 6-2 Bruins early
- Bellevue is able to plate 9 runs between the 4th and 6th innings, extending their lead 15-2
- The Comets find another spark in the top of the 7th where they are able to string together 5 runs, 4 of which were from a 2 out grand slam from Denton
- The Bruins would be able to get the final out and seal the 3rd game of the series 15-7
Game 4: L 8-9
- Comets score first with a solo shot by Kevin Conway in the top of the first inning
- A pair of doubles in the top of the second would extend the Comets' lead 2-0
- A solo 2 out Bruin home run made it a 2-1 game heading into the 3rd
- Bruins tie it up 2-2 on a pair of hits in the bottom of the 3rd and follow it up with 5 runs on 5 hits in the bottom of the 4th; 7-2 Bruins
- Comets chip away, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 6th to make it 5-7 Bruins
- A HBP, wild pitch and a triple plates 2 runs to make it 9-5 Bruins
- Denton draws a lead off walk in the top of the 9th
-
Jack McQueen hit a single and
Riley Rankin would hit a 3 run home run to cut the Bruins lead to 1
- The Comets would get a couple of 2 out singles but the Bruins would hold them off for the 9-8 win over Mayville State and the series sweep
"It's frustrating because if we just take care of the ball, we come home 2-2, but instead we come home 0-4. Did we pitch great? No. Did we hit great? No. But we did both of those good enough to get two wins," said Tomblin. "So this is frustration for all parties involved. This isn't just the coaches frustration, the players are frustrated as well. I really hope we take this 0-4 weekend and use it as a learning experience instead of a failure and see a chance as we head into playey Valley next weekend.
The Comets will head to Valley City State next Friday and Saturday for another NSAA match up. For full schedule details visit:Â
