Game Recap: Baseball | | Jordan Olson, SID

Comets Baseball gets two big wins against (RV) Jamestown

Sioux Falls, S.D. - Mayville State Comets Baseball hit the road again this season to take on the Jamestown Jimmies who are receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Baseball Poll. The games were originally scheduled to be held in Jamestown, however, mother nature would move things south to Sioux Falls, S.D.

Comet pitchers, Garret Lundmark and Calvin Watkins, would both pitch 7 inning gems against Jamestown in game 1 and game 3 to boost the Comets to a pair of big wins against the Jimmies.

Game 1: W 5-3
- Chris Shopbell gets a single and steals twice to get to 3rd and scores on a wild pitch to put the Comets up 1-0 in the first
- Jack McQueen hits a one out single in the 2nd and eventually finds his way home as Riley Rankin hits a solo RBI extending the Comets lead 2-0
- Garret Lundmark does a great job through 4 complete innings keep the Jimmies from reaching anything further than second base
- Jimmies would muster up a 2 out single and a double to plate 1 run in the bottom of the 5th
- In the top of the 6th, the Comets would find themselves with bases loaded and 2 outs after a pair of walks and a hit by pitch
- A wild pitch scored two runs followed by another RBI single by Rankin, making it 5-1
- The Jimmies threaten in the bottom of the 6th with a 2 out RBI double to get them within 2 runs of the Comets, but Lundmark would shut them down in the 7th giving the Comets a 5-3 road win against the Jimmies

"Garret was outstanding ont he mound for us in game one. He didn't have his best stuff but just kept finding a way to collect outs which ultimately led to him getting the complete game win," said Tomblin.

Game 2: L 7-19
- Jamestown would come out of the gates swinging, scoring runs in 5 of 6 innings plated
- The Jimmies would get up early, scoring 3 in the bottom of the 1st
- A pair of Jamestown errors would plate a run for the Comets making it a 3-1 ball game early
- The Jimmies bats explode in the bottom of the 2nd, scoring 9 runs on 9 hits
- They would continue this hit streak scoring 5 in the bottom of the 3rd and 1 in the 4th making it 18-1 heading into the 5th
- Mayville State was not done; the Comets scored 6 runs on 6 hits in the top of the 5th, but it wouldn't be enough and they would eventually fall 7-19

"We dug ourselves a big hole early and just couldn't dig ourselves out," said Tomblin. "Offensively we struggled early to get anything going against Zimmer, we were finally able to have a good offensive inning in the 5th, but as I mentioned before, we dug ourselves a hole and we just couldn't get out of it."

Game 3: W 4-2
- Jimmies score first with a 2 out SAC fly to left in the bottom of the 1st inning
- Mayville State ties it up in the top of the 3rd when Kevin Conway hits a 2 out RBI double
- Comets gain the lead in the top of the 4th when the Jimmies had a passed ball; 2-1 ball game
- The Jimmies tie it up in the bottom of the 6th 2-2
- Rankin reaches first on a Jimmie error in the top of the 7th
- Zachary Evanochko singles and with runners at 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs Chris Shopbell drives in 2 runs to put the Comets up 4-2
- Watkins goes three up, three down securing the win for Mayville State

"What a huge at bat by Shop with 2 outs in the top of the 7th. That's not an easy place to be as a hitter, tie game, two outs, two runners on and Chris did what Chris does and delivered in a huge way driving in those 2 runs and regaining the lead 4-2," commented Tomblin. "Calvin went out and finished what he started to collect the complete game win. He was fantastic today, was extremely efficient, mixed speeds well and was able to shut things down when Jamestown had opportunities to make some things happen."

Game 4: L 2-12
- The Comets score first in the top of the 1st with a RBI SAC fly from Carson Lundmark
- The Jimmies hit a 2 out in the park home run, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits to gain a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 2nd
- Jamestown tacks on another run in the bottom of the 3rd
- Carson Lundmark scores on a wild pitch with 2 outs in the top of the 4th making it a 4-2 game
- Things are quiet on both sides until the bottom the 6th where the Jimmies are able to score 4 more runs
- They tack on 4 more in the bottom of the 8th to end the game 12-2

"This is a frustrating loss for me because this one came down to me being out coached. I didn't anticipate that Jamestown would do what they did and I didn't make the adjustments needed to counteract it soon enough which ultimately led to us dropping a game that I feel we shouldn't have dropped," added Tomblin. "I felt the guys carried over some momentum from game one of today and did a good job in this game, this one is on me."

The Comets have a quick turn around, taking on Mount Marty University for a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 9th at 4pm & 6pm in Yankton, S.D. They will then head south to take on Bellevue on Friday and Saturday.
