Dickinson, N.D. - Mayville State Comets Baseball entered the NSAA Conference Tournament as the No. 7 and took on the No. 2 seed Jamestown Jimmies for the first round. Despite training 4-1 heading into the 6th inning, the Comets were able to push 11 more runs in the next 5 innings to upset the Jimmies 12-11.
"Just a great team win today. Garret battled his butt off on the mound, the entire offense battled their butts off at the plate and
Jack Wold came in and sealed the deal," said head coach Billy Tombiln.
How it happened:
- Comets score first in the top of the 4th from a
Chris Shopbell single,
Carson Lundmark double and a Jimmie error
- Jamestown is able to respond with 4 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the 4th, taking the lead 4-1
-
Jack McQueen led the 5th off with a single followed up with a walk from
Riley Rankin
-
Zachary Evanochko bunted his runners into scoring position and
Juan Villarreal hit a SAC fly to centerfield, making it a 2-4 ball game
- With two outs and a runner at 2nd, Shopbell hit a 2 run home run over center field, tying the game 4-4 midway through
- Jimmies take the lead in the bottom of the 5th, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits; 7-4 Jamestown
- The Comets draw back to back walks and are hit by a pitch, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the 6th
-
Riley Rankin hit an RBI single to right field and the Jimmies commit and error, allowing 2 more runs to score, tying the game 7-7
- Evanochko hit a SAC fly to left field, scoring Rankin and giving the Comets the 8-7 lead
- The Comets put up another 2 runs in the 8th and another in the 9th to extend their lead 12-7
- Jamestown threatens the Comets, scoring 4 runs on 3 hits, hitting 3 home runs in the inning, however,
Jack Wold would get the Comets ouf the jam and help boost Mayville State to a 12-11 victory
"Now we get into a little bit of a waiting game to see who we play and what time, but like we said after the game, enjoy this win, it was a great day, but come midnight, it's a new day and we need to get ready for whoever, whenever," added Tomblin.
The Comets will play the winner of the La Sierra and Dickinson State game, which is currently still being played; game times are TBD.
