Mayville, N.D. - The Mayville State women's basketball team delivered a gritty performance Friday night but came up short in a 71–61 conference loss to the Dickinson State Blue Hawks at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

The Comets matched Dickinson State's intensity from the opening tip, trading baskets throughout a tightly contested first quarter. Mayville State found early success moving the ball offensively and attacking the paint, keeping the score close as both teams settled into a physical conference battle.

Dickinson State began to create separation in the second quarter behind efficient shooting and second-chance points, but Mayville State responded with timely baskets to stay within striking distance. The Blue Hawks carried an advantage into halftime, 30-21.

Coming out of the break, the Comets turned in one of their strongest stretches of the night. Increased defensive pressure led to stops and transition opportunities, allowing Mayville State to cut into the deficit during the third quarter. 

The Blue Hawks regained control in the fourth quarter by capitalizing on late possessions and converting at the stripe. Mayville State continued to battle, attacking the basket and competing on the glass, but Dickinson State's late execution proved to be the difference in securing the 71–61 victory.

Hannah Stark led the night with 27 points and 8 rebounds, she was 8-18 from the field, 3-9 behind the arc and 8-9 at the line. Laela Jensen followed up with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

The Comets will take on the Bismarck State College Mystics on Monday, January 19th at 4:00pm in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
