Bellevue, Neb. – Mayville State Comets baseball hit the road this past weekend, taking on No. 3-ranked Bellevue in what was originally scheduled to be a home series in Mayville.
Despite dropping all four games, the Comets showed competitiveness against one of the top teams in the country.
Game 1 – L 1-2
- Sebastian Mizener threw a strong outing, going seven innings while allowing eight scattered hits, striking out three, and issuing no walks.
- The Comets played clean defense, committing zero errors.
- Bellevue struck first with an RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning and added another sac fly in the third to take a 2-0 lead.
- The game turned into a pitching duel, with limited offensive opportunities on both sides.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Jack McQueen delivered a two-out double, and pinch hitter Bode Roberts drew a walk to put the tying run on base.
- McQueen scored on a wild pitch, but that would be the Comets' only run as they fell just short, 2-1.
Game 2 – L 9-14
- Offense picked up in game two after a quiet start, with Bellevue breaking through for five runs in the fifth inning.
- The Comets answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning.
- Bellevue added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to extend its lead to 8-1.
- Mayville State responded in a big way, erupting for eight runs on eight hits in the bottom of the seventh to take a 9-8 lead.
- The Bruins regained control late, scoring six combined runs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the 14-9 win.
Game 3 – L 1-2
- Another pitcher's duel featured Garret Lundmark, who went the distance with seven innings, allowing seven hits and striking out four.
- Bellevue held a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning.
- The Comets broke through with an RBI from Jack McQueen but were unable to complete the comeback.
Game 4 – L 9-13
- The series finale turned into another high-scoring contest, with the Comets recording 19 hits and the Bruins tallying 16.
- Mayville State struck first with two runs in the opening inning.
- Bellevue responded with a six-run second inning to take control.
- The Comets continued to battle, scoring in every inning except the second, third, and sixth.
- Despite the offensive output, Bellevue pulled away late to take the final game 13-9.
The Comets are scheduled to travel to Valley City State on Tuesday for a single game before hosting the Vikings on Friday and Saturday, with all games subject to change due to weather.
Mayville State currently sits third in the conference standings at 7-8, just one game behind Dakota State.
